SUMMARYReporting to the municipal fleet manager, the incumbent performs a wide range of mechanical work related to the checking, adjustment and maintenance of mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronic parts of transport vehicles, equipment and tools from all municipal departments in accordance with accepted industry practices.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Use computerized and other diagnostic equipment to identify the causes of mechanical issues and determine whether the affected parts should be replaced, repaired or refurbished; prepare spare-parts lists
  • Carry out preventive maintenance on equipment and vehicles, including oil and tire changes and upkeep of braking systems, steering systems, gear wheels, bearings, axles, shock absorbers, etc.; report any anomalies to the supervisor
  • Remove and reinstall engines, carburetors and transmissions; disassemble, repair and reassemble differentials, clutches, pivots and other components
  • Carry out minor maintenance and repair work on ignition systems, exhaust manifolds, cooling systems, headlights and lights
  • Carry out necessary repairs to new mechanisms, as per their instruction manuals; install auxiliary mechanisms on various devices
  • Perform various minor repairs on the road when required, so that the affected vehicle or motorized device can be returned to the garage
  • Drive and/or operate certain vehicles requiring road tests to diagnose problems or check repairs
  • Clean and lubricate equipment and perform other routine maintenance work
  • Use oxyacetylene (gas) welding equipment to heat, cut and weld as required
  • Fill out vehicle maintenance and repair records and documents
  • Abide by occupational health and safety standards
  • Perform any other tasks required for the smooth running of operations
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSEducation
  • College diploma – Automotive Service Technician or equivalent
Qualifications
  • Truck and transport maintenance credentials recognized by the New Brunswick Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour
Training
  • General first aid and CPR
  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
  • Additional training may be required, depending on the needs
Experience
  • Five (5) years in transport vehicle maintenance
  • Basic experience in heavy equipment maintenance would be an asset
Driver’s licence
  • A valid class 5 driver’s licence
Knowledge
  • Good knowledge of spoken and written French and English
  • Good working knowledge of applicable occupational health and safety legislation
  • Extensive knowledge of the construction and operation of power equipment, diagnostic techniques, industry practices, trends and regulations, and the tools of the trade
  • Basic welding knowledge

WORK SCHEDULE
  • Forty (40) hours a week
SALARY
  • The hourly rate is $36.96 per hour, as per the collective agreement.
  • 90% of the rate of pay for the first year of service, and 95% fo the rate of pay until 2 years of service is reached.
