Together we are more than 5,000 dedicated faculty, librarians and staff supporting the University of Victoria's diverse academic programs, world-class research and commitment to civic engagement.Job SummaryReporting to the Senior Registered Laboratory Animal Technicians - Operations, the Animal Care Service Workers provide infrastructure support to all research and teaching animal facilties and administrative areas.These positions work in a lab environment where there is a hazard of Laboratory Animal Allergy. There are mandatory requirements in place to minimize/ eliminate the hazard, such as enrolment in the UVic Allergy Awareness program (requiring baseline and annual pulmonary function tests) and adherence to WorkSafeBC requirements (including the appropriate use of and to be clean-shaven while wearing a respirator). The ACSWs are required to maintain no known allergies to rodents or rabbits.Job RequirementsSkills:
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to learn and apply new techniques.
  • Ability to follow detailed written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to listen actively and attentively, and obtain clarification as required.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, staff and students.
  • Ability to carry out an effective work schedule under limited supervision.
  • Ability to appropriately present the unit and its services, presenting a professional appearance.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills are essential.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the job including: working outdoors in potentially inclement weather (outdoor clothing is provided), working indoors without windows, working with high temperature steam equipment, constant mobility (including lifting up to 25 kg, bending and reaching), performing repetitive tasks, and ability to operate tools and equipment continually.
  • No known allergies to rodents or rabbits, or the products used in their housing and care.
Specialized Knowledge/Education:
  • Valid British Columbia driver's licence with a clean driver's abstract is required.
  • High school diploma or equivalency
Experience:
  • Experience with the operation and maintenance of assorted equipment.
  • A minimum of two years of work experience.
