
Traffic Technician 2

- Review transportation and traffic designs, drawings, studies, analyses and reports to ensure conformity to City standards and policies and relevant technical guidelines and specifications
- Review development-related drawings and documentation to provide technical guidance on transportation infrastructure upgrades in alignment with City bylaws and policies.
- Conduct field investigations and data collection on traffic volumes, traffic speeds, collision frequency, pedestrian and cyclist counts.
- Conduct field inspections, traffic studies, traffic device warrants, intersection sightline inspections and post-construction traffic control deficiencies.
- Review and implement traffic calming measures and traffic control devices.
- Analyze traffic and parking data and traffic collision statistics and review potential road safety modifications.
- Provide traffic-related technical support for special events affecting traffic operations.
- Prepare and review reports and memorandums outlining transportation and traffic analyses, results and recommendations
- Liaise with customers, stakeholders and external agencies relating to traffic and transportation objectives.
- Maintain files, records, and regulatory documents.
- Provide customer service to internal and external clients by addressing transportation-related inquiries.
- Complete tasks and activities to support the City’s Transportation department.
- Provide technical guidance to the Traffic Technician 1 as required.
- Knowledge of City of Richmond’s Engineering, Traffic and Zoning bylaws, specifications, policies and standards.
- Knowledge of drafting and design as related to traffic and transportation engineering
- Knowledge in the operation of AutoCAD and CorelDraw would be an asset.
- Knowledge of traffic and transportation engineering design principles, regulations, policies and practices including parking regulation policies.
- Ability to prepare, interpret and review traffic data, studies and assessments.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering, architectural and survey drawings, reports, contracts, plans and specifications.
- Ability to design traffic devices and related installations and prepare applicable specifications, maps and drawings.
- Ability to make timely decisions, resolve conflicts and work under pressure.
- Ability to work well in a team environment;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective collaborative working relationships with the public and internal and external contacts.
- Ability to provide leadership to junior or temporary staff.
- Ability to exercise considerable independence of judgement and action within established guidelines.
- Ability to operate Windows-based computer applications such as MS Word, Outlook, Excel, electric document management systems (REDMS), application tracking software (AMANDA) and GIS.
- Skill in effective verbal and written communication with both internal and external customers.
- Ability to successfully pass a Police Information Check.
- Completion of Grade 12, plus a two-year diploma from a post-secondary educational institution specializing in engineering, applied science technology, traffic and transportation, municipal planning or a related discipline;
- A minimum of two years of recent technical work experience related to engineering and public works, traffic operations, transportation engineering or municipal planning;
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered;
- Experience working in a municipal environment is preferred.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia.
