SCOPE OF POSITIONUnder the responsibility of the Manufacturing Manager, the Maintenance Manager is responsible for the entire operation of the maintenance department, including projects related to safety, productivity, quality as well as training. He/she is responsible for the preventive maintenance program and the supply of parts and services for the entire Glopak Division. Management and coaching of the personnel under their responsibly, namely the Mechanics /Electro-mechanics as well as the Automation Technician.Given the food clientele that Hood Packaging deserts and the risks associated with our manufacturing activities, the incumbent of this position must undertake to comply with all policies associated with quality and safety in order to ensure the continuity of SQF certification.The Maintenance Manager has the power to act and make decisions within the limits of our applicable policies and food safety and quality standards. Delegating responsibilities or assigning duties to others does not eliminate responsibility for results. Performance will be measured by his ability to fulfill his responsibilities.In the absence of the Maintenance Manager, the Manufacturing Manager or its designate will assume the responsibilities of this position.FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIESHealth and Safety Responsibilities
  • Act as a leader in workplace health and safety by ensuring that employees adopt safe behaviors.
  • Ensure that policies and instructions are rigorously followed by all unionized employees.
  • Ensure that health and safety training is given to all employees under their responsibility.
  • Train employees in safe work procedure and enforce safety rules.
  • Ensure that health and safety deficiencies are properly identified, communicated and follow-ups are carried up according to a schedule and acceptable management standards.
  • Report all incidents and near miss to the management team as soon as possible.
  • Perform daily safety inspections.
  • Study security proposal and recommend appropriate implementation.
  • Actively promote a safe environment and ensure that maintenance personnel and contractors operate safely. Follow all plant safety rules, including equipment lockout.
Maintenance Management
  • Monitor machines for safe operating conditions and generate maintenance work orders as necessary.
  • Become aware of and analyze dangerous conditions and recommend corrective measures to be taken.
  • Administer and coordinate the preventative maintenance program and make recommendations regarding equipment condition and problem areas.
  • Plan, assign and prioritize work to be performed during the plant maintenance shutdown and allocates personnel accordingly.
  • Ensure housekeeping is maintained at a high standard (food safety).
  • Ensure monitoring of repair and maintenance expenses in order to respect the budget. Have approbation for variance beyond budget.
  • Participate in continuous improvement projects.
  • Manage capitalizable maintenance projects, ensuring that the costs and deadlines established with the manufacturing manager are respected.
  • Responsible for maintenance and modifications to the building by planning work.
  • Manage the application of the maintenance part of the food safety program (e.g. SQF, HACCP).
  • Coordinate actions to meet the requirement of the insure FM Global.
  • Keep up to date with new products, methods, or technologies.
  • Participate in internal complaints and customer complaints.
Contractor Maintenance
  • Make arrangements with outside workshops, contractors or suppliers and prepare items to send for repair or modification. Assist in the preparation of drawings or instructions necessary to go with the parts sent.
  • Determine the parts needed for repairs supply, after part supplier and prepare the purchase order.
  • Control contractor access, record work locations, work performed and entry/exit time and controls distribution or contractor access cards.
  • Review performance of plant service contractors and building maintenance/repairs.
  • Maintain facilities and equipment in accordance with our insurance policy requirements.
  • Maintain records of work orders and work performed and maintain a computerized maintenance system.
  • Award annual maintenance contracts for the various services.
Human Resources Management
  • Direct and supervise staff in carrying out their responsibilities, including coverage for all absences.
  • Train or organize training to maintain sufficient skill levels in the department.
  • Motivate, supervise and advise staff in the context of their responsibilities as needed.
  • Prepare work schedules and prioritize/plan the work to be done jointly with the Manufacturing Manager and/or the Production Manager.
  • Hold department meetings with staff according to a pre-established schedule.
  • Check and approve all weekly timecards for his department.
Other tasks
  • Respect and maintain SQF and HACCP standards for the daily operations of their department.
  • Support the organization to maintain our SQF structure and FDA certifications.
  • Participate in conferences, training or others, in order to increase their knowledge and skills in the context of this position, and this, at the request or with the agreement of their supervisor.
MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Evaluate and conduct performance reviews on a semi-annual basis.
  • Administer disciplinary measures with all relevant personnel regarding their direct reports.
  • Approve vacations and advise authorized leaves of absence for their team.
  • Monitor repair and maintenance expenses in order to respect the budget.
  • Obtain all approvals for budget variances.
KEY WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
  • Daily contact, as needed, with other supervisors/managers to discuss maintenance or machinery issues.
  • Daily contact with Manufacturing Manager and Production Manager to receive direction on specific issues or pass on information.
  • Daily contact with Cornwall Superintendent to receive direction on specific issues or relay information.
  • Frequent contact with contractors either to coordinate their activity in the factory or to give or receive information.
  • Frequent contact with supplier representatives to view products, obtain quotes or obtain other information to keep abreast of the latest developments.
  • Frequent contact with the purchasing and planning department.
  • Interaction with all levels of management on an almost continuous basis.
FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Regular use of computers, telephones and other office equipment.
  • Use of technical drawing software (CAD).
  • Managing complex tasks and priorities.
  • Ability to read and understand task safety analyses (TSA).
  • Ability to understand and follow food, safety and quality procedures.
  • Read, understand and follow quality system procedures (QSP).
  • Ability to make decision with information and time constraints.
  • Ability to quantify results, identify new opportunities.
  • Ability to make presentations in front of a group of peers.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Periods of light physical effort.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Office, maintenance shop and shop floor
  • Cornwall facility as required.
QUALIFICATIONS – EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCEEducation:
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering in a related field
  • Be a member of the OIQ
Experiences:
  • 10 years of related experience, preferably in the plastic production industry.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a management position.
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment and unionized environment is a great asset
QUALIFICATIONS – SKILLS
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership in a unionized environment.
  • Knowledge of the principals of continuous improvement is an asset.
  • Ability to make decisions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally.
  • Bilingualism both oral and written (French and English).
  • Customer service oriented.
  • Practical knowledge of electricity, including AC and DC electronics, power distribution and circuit protection.
