For more information on New College, seeUnder the general direction of the Assistant Principal & Registrar, the Associate Director, Student Advising and Academic Success, ensures the smooth operation of the unit by providing leadership and managerial oversight to a team of advising professionals, providing excellent one-on-one student academic advising, managing complex high-risk student cases and developing student academic success programs and initiatives. The Associate Director will aim to provide holistic, seamless and personalized support through understanding of University and Faculty of Arts and Science policies and procedures, understanding of pedagogy, technologies and models for student learning and well-being, and develop academic success programs and initiatives according to the needs of the New College student demographic. The Associate Director will also be responsible for coaching their team of advising professionals by developing and implementing training to ensure advising supports offered by the registrarial office are in alignment with the strategic objectives College and Faculty.The Associate Director has a deep understanding of Adult Education, Student Development, Higher Education, Developmental or Counselling Psychology, in delivering professional student support, and to comprehend complexities and trade-offs involved in meeting the needs of the students, the faculty and the University. This position will be asked to provide recommendations to other University offices, the college principal, senior management, and department leaders on complex high-risk student cases and provide advice on potential actions and associated consequences. The Associate Director will work with the Registrar to provide leadership and senior level support. Represents New College at various faculty and student Committees, and at the University of Toronto.Qualifications:I. EDUCATION:University degree in Adult Education, Student Development, Higher Education, Developmental or Counselling Psychology or related field required; graduate degree preferred (i.e. education); or an equivalent combination of education and experienceII. EXPERIENCE:Five (5) years of progressive experience in student academic and registrarial service and in one or more of the areas of: student advising, learning support, career education, and/or student life. At least two (2) years' experience in managing and leading staff, including the supervision of full-time appointed staff in a unionized environment. Demonstrated working experience providing academic counselling to students and managing nuanced student cases in relation to student mental health concerns, academic risk factors, concerns with personal safety, etc. Experience supporting students to facilitate academic success and dealing with students with complex needs. Direct experience developing, implementing and continually evaluating student services in a postsecondary education environment. Experience working with students from a broad range of academic, racial, economic and social backgrounds. Solid experience in overseeing the development and implementation of career development workshops. Knowledge of academic advising best practices. Familiarity with the University of Toronto and Faculty of Arts and Science communities, its policies, regulations, and polices is an asset. Experience with data collection, management and data analysis. Experience running peer programming. Experience in developing academic success learning opportunities.III. SKILLS:Ability to design curriculum in an experiential learning framework. Ability to design assessment and learning outcomes for all programs offered. Excellent management and leadership skills, ability to mentor, and the ability to effectively lead and manage change. Ability to work in a collaborative, team-oriented environment. Strong organizational management abilities. Planning, organizational and analytical skills - in particular skills in managing both annual and sessional planning process. Project management skills; ability to direct large-scale projects, e.g. re-development of a website or selection of computer systems. Aptitude and familiarity with budget accountability, including forecasts and multi-year budget projections. Excellent oral and written communication skills and presentation skills to large and small audiences. Research, analytical and reporting skills related to current educational trends and best practices. Well-developed computer skills in word-processing, spreadsheet applications and presentation software (PowerPoint, Prezi, etc.).IV. OTHER:Must have a strong understanding of the academic environment and a commitment to student development. High degree of political acuity and judgment. Ability to interact effectively and cooperatively with individuals at all levels and build sustainable relationships.
