A leading northern manufacturing company is seeking a Director of Health and Safety to lead and continuously improve their health and safety management system. This senior leadership role offers a strategic opportunity to champion compliance with regulatory requirements and foster a proactive culture of safety that engages employees at all levels. The successful candidate will drive initiatives to reduce risk, prevent injury, and enhance overall employee well-being and operational performance.The Role
As the Director of Health and Safety, you will be responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive safety strategy aligned with business goals and regulatory standards. You will ensure full compliance with occupational health and safety legislation, lead the investigation of incidents, and promote continuous improvement in safety programs across the site.Key ResponsibilitiesDevelop and maintain proactive safety programs including risk assessments, behavior-based safety initiatives, and near-miss reporting systems.Build and sustain safety culture through visible leadership, ongoing training, coaching, and workforce engagement.Analyze safety performance data, identify trends, and implement improvement strategies.Collaborate cross-functionally with operations, maintenance, HR, and other departments to embed safety into all business practices.Prepare and present regular safety reports to executive leadership and regulatory bodies as required.Oversee emergency response and preparedness programs, including drill coordination and readiness assessments.Mentor and develop health and safety staff to build expertise and leadership capacity within the team.QualificationsPost-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or related field.7+ years of progressive leadership experience in health and safety within heavy manufacturing, industrial, or pulp and paper environments.Strong knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation and regulations.Proven ability to develop, implement, and sustain effective health and safety management systems.Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.Advanced analytical skills with the ability to use data to drive safety improvements.Professional certification such as CRSP, CSP, or CHSC is an asset.
