
Mental Health and Addictions Nurse (MHAN) - Permanent Full-Time

- Provide support to DSBs to build capacity for recognizing and appropriately responding to student mental health and addictions issues.
- Collaborate with an inter-disciplinary team and provide essential health-related advice and support to the DSBs’ staff in developing comprehensive plans to respond to the mental health and addiction needs of students.
- Advise school staff on potential side effects of different classes of medications, and provide medical consultation to school staff regarding issues such as medication management for individual students.
- Provide early interventions of care for working with students and families as addressed with counseling and therapeutic interventions and follow up assessments for mental health and addiction issues.
- Provide support to the intervention team in the management of complex issues such as refusal to attend treatment, self-harm, suicide, or violent behavior.
- Provide essential health-related advice and support to the Mental Health leaders in developing comprehensive board plans to respond to the mental health and addiction needs of students.
- Act as a spokesperson as required, and interpret the role of Ontario Health atHome to patients, health care professionals, and to the public. Ensure positive public relations and effective coordination of services through ongoing liaison and participation on internal and external committees.
- Assess and promote a safe environment for patients, caregivers, family members, and staff.
- Receive, prioritize and take timely action regarding new request for service.
- Develop and build relationships with mental health service providers and educators by utilizing various forms of communication including face-to- face and virtual/telephone interactions.
- Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of relevant experience as a Registered Nurse (BScN or diploma)
- Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Minimum of two (2) years of direct clinical experience in providing mental health and/or addictions services for children and youth
- Knowledge of the mental health and addictions service system for children and youth
- Solid knowledge of health care related legislation and practices
- Advanced assessment and diagnostic reasoning skills
- Ability to work independently
- Effective interpersonal and communications skills
- Demonstrated experience as a Registered Nurse
- Must have valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle (Significant travel within the respective school board districts of Bruce County)
