
Senior Substation Engineer

- Lead detailed design and engineering of greenfield and brownfield substation projects, including physical layout, protection & control, grounding, and ancillary systems
- Perform electrical studies, equipment specifications, technical reports, and design packages for new installations, upgrades, or expansions
- Prepare and review design documents, drawings (SLDs, schematics, wiring diagrams), and construction packages
- Coordinate with other disciplines (civil, structural, telecom, SCADA, etc.) to ensure integrated and constructible designs
- Provide mentorship to junior engineers and designers, review work for quality and technical accuracy
- Support project managers in estimating, scheduling, procurement, and client communication
- Ensure compliance with relevant industry codes (CSA, IEEE, NEC, NESC), utility standards, and safety regulations
- Conduct site visits for design validation, commissioning support, and construction review
- Interface with clients, stakeholders, and regulatory bodies throughout project lifecycle
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (Master’s degree considered an asset)
- Minimum 8 years of experience in substation engineering, including high-voltage design
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registered or eligible for registration with APEGA
- Strong knowledge of substation systems, including transformers, breakers, relays, protection schemes, and grounding
- Proficiency in engineering software (e.g., AutoCAD, ETAP, CDEGS, CYME, or similar tools)
- Experience with utility standards and regulatory requirements in Alberta
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Proven leadership, problem-solving, and project coordination skills
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to site locations as required
