Job Description:Position: Chemical OperatorShift: Rotating shift - 12 hours per day - 4:30AM-4.30PM (day shift) or 4.30PM- 4.30AM (night shift)Primary Location: Fort Saskatchewan, ABReports to: Operations supervisorCompensation: $42.60/hr.The CAD hourly rate for this position is $42.60 + benefits. Hourly rates are determined by role, level, and location. The hourly rate displayed on each job posting reflects the starting rate for new hires for the position. Rates may also be determined by work location and additional factors, including job related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. More specific rate factors for your preferred location can be discussed during the hiring process, as some facilities are subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements. By putting people at the center of our operations, we build strong connections, nurture innovation, and create a fulfilling work experience for all.About the position and about youThis position is responsible for manufacturing chemicals and loading chemicals for transport into vessels including tanker trailers, rail cars, and totes. Due to the hazardous nature of the chemicals being handled and stored, this position requires an extremely safety conscientious individual with a highly developed safety attitude and safety focus combined with the ability to demonstrate a high and sustainable focus on attention to detail.QualificationsKnowledge
  • High School Diploma or GED, consideration given to those with further education and or skills such as trades or power engineering experience.
Competencies
  • Must place safety first at all times.
  • Forklift Training/Experience preferred
  • Ability to move containers with proper material handling equipment
  • Able to wear self-contained breathing apparatus
  • Must have the ability to perform basic math functions
  • Must possess excellent customer service skills, verbal and written communication skills, and computer knowledge
  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to work with a minimum of supervision, is highly motivated, energetic, and enjoys working as part of a team
Key Responsibilities
  • Control and monitor plant and equipment within the scope of authority
  • Measuring, mixing and adding chemicals to the reaction tanks
  • Monitoring meter and instrument readings and making necessary adjustments
  • Observes pressure, temperature, level, and flow gauges to ensure standard operation
  • Testing samples for quality purposes
  • Fills railcars, trailers, IBCs, drums and records quantity.
  • Prepare the work area for maintenance and reinstate after maintenance is complete.
  • Carry out in-scope maintenance operations.
  • Cleaning and preparing equipment, and minor maintenance work.
  • Fill out log sheets, specifying tare and gross weight, cylinder number, and date filled, and records data.
  • Perform all required pre-fill and post-fill inspections and tests before containers are released.
  • Ensure records are accurately maintained and that all required procedures are followed in accordance with local, provincial, and federal regulations.
  • Safely operate a Forklift and Wheel loader.
  • Maintains a neat, clean, and orderly work area.
  • Performs mathematical calculations related to filling capacities as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Product Loading
  • Load Aluminum Sulfate products, Sulfuric Acid, Sodium Bisulfite (SBS) and MSX 2000 tank trucks and tank cars following established procedures that meet safety, regulatory, and quality requirements.
  • Inspect tank trucks and tank cars.
  • Complete shipping documentation.
  • Operate loader and lift truck.
Product Manufacturing
  • Manufacture on-specification liquid Aluminum Sulphate, Sodium Bisulfite and MSX 2000.
  • Unload raw materials from hopper cars into silos and ensure products meet specifications.
  • Unload caustic soda and aqua ammonia into storage tank and ensure product specifications are met.
  • Off-load sulfur dioxide rail cars for SBS production.
  • Maintain accurate production log sheets.
  • Sample and conduct product testing according to procedure.
Sulfuric Acid Receiving
  • Inspect and receive Sulfuric Acid via pipeline or tank car. Control tank levels and conduct daily inventories.
  • Monitor acid receipts and shipments. Input data onto the excel log sheet.
  • Conduct daily quality assurance testing and enter data onto excel log sheet.
Site Maintenance
  • Assist operations staff with site maintenance activities; equipment preventative maintenance, snow removal, house & grounds keeping, painting, etc.
Physical DemandsThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:· Push, pull, lift, carry, or maneuver weights of up to 100 pounds.· The ability to spend long periods of time walking and standing.· Requirements to wear a half mask, full mask, and SCBA (must be clean shaven) as required.Working Environment
  • Chemical manufacturing plant producing Liquid Alum, ACH and PAC chemicals
  • Physical capability of performing tasks in 100-degree ambient temperatures while wearing Protective Personal Protection.
  • This job requires climbing stairs and ladders and also lifting (within OSHA guidelines).
  • This job consists of outside elements where radiant heat or cold is normal work environment, and rotating shifts.
  • Following all plant safety guidelines such as: Confined Space, Working with heights Management of Change, Hot Work and Operating Procedures
  • Must be able to work scheduled 8-hour days with intermittent 14 – 16-hour days for emergency operations/repairs.
