You will also work closely with the team programming In Town and Out, our morning current affairs radio program, both on-air during news breaks and live interactions, and off-air to coordinate coverage.You’re the kind of journalist who loves the adrenaline rush of chasing breaking news and you’re not intimidated by the prospect of changing lineups and rewriting newscasts under very tight deadlines. You embrace the challenge of keeping your newscasts as up-to-date as possible, chasing stories yourself and working to add context and additional content to ensure listeners get the full story.You understand the diverse and changing population in Ottawa and surrounding region, and the importance of broadening the range of perspectives, experiences and points of view reflected on our programming, especially those from people who have been traditionally underrepresented in the media. In your work, you will ensure CBC journalistic standards are met and that our stories are fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful and immediate.This role requires full-time on-site presence. This is a temporary part time six month position ending October 03, 2026Note: The successful candidate will generally be assigned to work Saturday and Sunday, 4:00 am to 12:15 p.m.Your responsibilities:Plan, organize, line up and deliver newscasts and news breaksCollaborate with journalists across platforms and programs to chase breaking news and ensure newscasts are up-to-dateWrite and edit scripts; cut audio clips and package storiesConduct interviews on and off airSelf-operate the studio audio board during live newscastsVet scripts written by other journalists, providing feedback and coaching to help them develop their skills and produce content of the highest qualityInteract live on air with hosts and program participantsPresent newscasts on other platforms (streaming, podcasts, digital, video) as requiredYour profile:Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced daily news environment.Ability to generate, pitch and pursue strong, original story ideas.Strong news judgment and a demonstrated ability to react quickly to breaking news and changing priorities, and chase multiple stories at once.Excellent critical thinking skills, including knowledge of the legal and ethical issues related to journalism.Engaging on-air presence, a strong presentation style and an ease with live, on-air work.Ability to present material with credibility and authority in a range of situations including live events and breaking news.Ability to quickly cut audio clips from a variety of audio and video sources.Superior script writing and script edging skills.An understanding of Ottawa and areas political landscape, economic drivers and demographics, and a strong proven connection to the communities we serve.A proven work ethic, strong communication skills and a positive, team-first attitude.A strong desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.Possession of a valid driver’s licence as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company.University degree in journalism or equivalent related experience.Ability and willingness to work flexible hours as required.Please include additional documentation or a link to your online demo or website, blog or video in your cover letter.Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.As part of our recruitment process, candidates who advance to the nextstep will be asked to complete a background check.
