
Operator - Water Treatment Plant (Full-Time)

- Performs routine inspections and basic alarm checks of plants and equipment, buildings and site as outlined by the Plant Inspection Schedule and reports deficiencies.
- Reads, monitors, and records charts and meter readings, prepares process calculations, and assists with input of process statistics in plant computer.
- Operates pumps, compressors, etc., adjusts chlorinator, chemical feed pumps, valves and other operational equipment, to ensure that correct dosages and proper plant operations are maintained.
- Performs assigned duties such as janitorial cleaning, chemical mixing, filter washing, minor maintenance of equipment, and switches sodium hypochlorite tanks .
- Collects process samples and performs analytical tests for all operational parameters.
- Ensures the security of the plant and property by locking all doors, windows, and gates, as required by established directives.
- Starts, switches, and operates stand-by power equipment.
- Reports and documents in the plant log, all unusual operating conditions and equipment in need of servicing.
- Performs and assists with confined space entries, and uses self-contained breathing apparatus, as required.
- Assists the Maintenance staff as required.
- Performs minor standardization and calibration on instruments.
- Receives and assists in the unloading of plant chemicals.
- Actively participates in a team work environment.
- Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.
- Must possess 2 years post-secondary education or 90 continuing education credits in a field deemed appropriate by the Ministry of the Environment.
- Must possess a valid passing grade on the Water Treatment and Water Distribution Operator in Training exam
- Must possess and be able to demonstrate a basic knowledge of mechanical and electrical maintenance as well as basic mathematics and chemistry
- Must possess computer skills
- Must be capable of issuing and accurately comprehending written/oral information and instructions
- Must be tactful and courteous with the public
- Must be reliable and capable of performing routine work with a minimum of supervision
- Must possess and maintain a valid Class “G” Ontario Drivers Licence, or equivalent
- Must meet the definition of a competent driver as defined by the Corporation
- Must be competent within the meaning of the Occupational Health & Safety Act, as amended
- Must complete mandatory entry level drinking water operator course for operators in training
- Within 2 years of hire, must attain and maintain a Class I Drinking Water Operator Certificate in Water Distribution Subsystems and Water Treatment Subsystems
- Within 4 years of hire, must attain and maintain a Class II Drinking Water Operator Certificate in Water Distribution Subsystems and Water Treatment Subsystems
- Must be physically capable to perform the duties of the job and be willing to work weekends and shifts as required.
- Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.
- Must attain a First Aid Certificate
- Must remain a competent driver as defined by the Corporation
- May be required to provide a successful driver’s record (uncertified)
- Must undergo a successful Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC)
