Families First is a community-based resource designed to promote healthy growth and development of children by supporting families in their homes during pregnancy and the first five years of a child's life, for a period of up to three years. Under the guidance of the Families First - Public Health Nurse, and directly reporting to the Regional Manager - Public Health-Healthy Living, the Home Visitor I acts as a member of an inter-disciplinary team and is responsible to initiate and maintain regular connection through family centered home based visiting. The incumbent will utilize an evidence informed curriculum, and share activities that support positive parent-child relationships and enhance child health and development as well as build on existing strengths by optimizing the family's use of community resources. In consultation with Public Health Nurses, the Home Visitor I has a responsibility to support families to explore goals related to their values.The incumbent exercises the appropriate level of initiative and independent judgment in determining work priorities, work methods to be employed and action to be taken on unusual matters. The position functions in a manner that is consistent with the mission, vision and values; and the policies of Southern Health-Santé Sud.Qualifications:
- Grade twelve (XII) education or equivalent
- Working knowledge of parent-child attachment and early childhood development
- Knowledge of and ability to link to community resources that support families, parenting, and optimal childhood growth and development
- Previous experience working with families with young children
- Demonstrated strong interpersonal & communication skills
- Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated decision-making and problem-solving skills
- Demonstrated ability to adapt to a changing environment
- Demonstrated ability to establish effective and professional working relationships
- Demonstrated ability to work independently & effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary team
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with community resources that support families, parenting, and optimal childhood growth and development
- Given the cultural diversity of our region, the ability to respect and promote a culturally diverse population is required
- Proficiency of both official languages is essential for target and designated bilingual positions
- Demonstrated ability to respect confidentiality including paper, electronic formats and other mediums
- Demonstrated ability to meet the physical and mental demands of the job
- Good work and attendance record
- Completes and maintains a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, Vulnerable Sector Search, Adult Abuse Registry Check and Child Abuse Registry Check, as appropriate.
- All Health Care workers are required to be immunized as a condition of employment in accordance with Southern Health-Santé Sud policy.
- Requires a valid Class 5 driver's license, an all-purpose insured vehicle and liability insurance of at least $1,000,000.00
