- Maintains server operating systems by installing, configuring, and updating systems.
- Maintains server hardware by installing or upgrading hardware, to ensure properly functioning servers.
- Enables network services on servers, by configuring servers, to ensure servers are properly using these services.
- Secures servers using security best practices and guidance from Cyber Security.
- Performs backups and restores of servers by working with backup software and storage systems to ensure integrity of data.
- Monitors servers by using monitoring software and by checking logs to ensure properly functioning, secure servers.
- Maintains documentation on servers and processes.
- Maintains properly functioning workstations by installing, configuring, and updating operating systems.
- Maintains workstation hardware performance by installing or upgrading hardware.
- Maintains workstation research software by installing and configuring software to enable research activities.
- Services client requests in a timely fashion by monitoring the service software ticket queue.
- Solves common systems issues by troubleshooting and repairing to ensure a properly functioning systems environment. May need to work with external consultants for resolution of some issues.
- Responsible for assisting in procuring support coverage for research systems, working with the research owner, to ensure an adequately supported environment.
- Improves skills and knowledge by attending meetings, seminars, and training courses to keep pace with the constantly changing information technology industry.
- Performs other duties as required.
- College diploma in information technology or in a related technology discipline.
- Two years of directly related experience.
- Proficient in server hardware, server equipment mounting (including data and electrical cabling), server operating systems (*nix and Windows).
- Some knowledge of operating systems scripting.
- Proficient in data storage systems.
- Some experience in authentication systems.
- Proficient in infrastructure services, such as DNS, NTP, email, logging, authentication/identity systems.
- Proficient in data backup systems and monitoring and logging systems.
- Proficient in a Cloud-based server environment.
- Basic knowledge of Cybersecurity practices.
- Basic knowledge of network concepts.
- Basic knowledge of electrical concepts with respect to hardware power inputs and power backups.
- Well-developed oral and written communications, technical and non-technical.
- Proficient in office productivity software, including Microsoft Visio.
- Able to update knowledge and skills with rapidly changing technology.
- Able to work with interruptions.
- Able to multitask.
- A valid Manitoba Class 5 driver license is preferred.
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
- Able to work flexible hours, which includes evening and weekend work.
