Job Description:In order to ensure your application is received by NAIT for thorough review and consideration, please apply directly through our Careers site atPlease Note: This is a temporary position ending on or before May 29, 2026, with the possibility of extension.Reporting to the Academic Strategy and Operations Manager, this position is a member of the team responsible for the day-to-day lab tech duties for the Biological Sciences Department. The Educational Laboratory Technologist II provides assistance in biological science labs. This position will assist with lab set up, prep, animal care, maintenance and facilitation of lab operations.Key Responsibilities:
  • Prepare and support courses in the Biological Sciences programs including but not limited to zoology, entomology, biodiversity, animal care, helping out with field courses and field trips. Also aiding staff in the three streams, LRB, EMA and CB, with what ever is needed.
  • Provide support to instructors during lab activities and in-class demonstrations.
  • Provide care of laboratory animals including basic rodent husbandry, cage changes and basic facility maintenance.
  • Set-up, maintain, calibrate and complete minor repairs of laboratory, field equipment, and instruments used by staff and students for courses in the Biological Sciences Technology program.
  • Provide support to instructors in the explanation, demonstration and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment/instruments and procedures.
  • Maintain labs and associated areas to meet safety and professional standards.
  • Prepare and maintain prep notes outlining course materials and delivery timelines for each supported course.
  • Work collaboratively with instructional staff to support the development of new, and modification of existing, lab procedures.
  • Maintain inventory of stock items and chemicals required for the smooth functioning of labs, field supplies and equipment.
  • Ensure materials for laboratory course delivery are ordered, present and available when required.
  • Safety dispose of chemical and biological wastes and other hazardous materials.
  • Assist with the installation of new equipment and instruments.
  • Write SOPs for laboratory equipment and procedures, and perform maintenance of equipment/instruments per maintenance schedules.
  • Safe transportation of staff and students on field courses including passenger vans, large vehicles and trailers.

Qualifications::
  • Diploma in Biological Sciences with a specialization in Environmental Monitoring and Assessment, or Conservation Biology, or equivalent, required.
  • Willingness to work with animals and cleaning cages is essential.
  • First-Aid Standard C certification an asset
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently or in a team environment.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills required
  • Must be physically able to lift 50 lbs
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license and clean driving record required
Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services or the International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS).Remuneration: $27.13 - $36.65 per hour, plus 12% in lieu of statutory holidays and vacation accrual.
