A major Canadian industrial manufacturer in the pulp and paper sector is hiring a Director of Maintenance to lead its asset reliability, maintenance strategy, and equipment performance initiatives. This high-impact role is central to ensuring operational stability, safety, and cost efficiency in a complex, integrated facility.The Director of Maintenance is responsible for the strategic leadership of the mill's entire maintenance organization, including mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, reliability, and planning functions. The position's core focus is on improving asset availability, reducing downtime, and extending equipment life through proactive maintenance methodologies and a culture of continuous improvement.
Key responsibilities include:
  • Designing and executing a comprehensive maintenance strategy aligned with production and long-term asset management goals.
  • Leading a multidisciplinary team to ensure efficient, safe, and cost-effective execution of maintenance work.
  • Implementing reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) and predictive maintenance practices.
  • Ensuring all maintenance operations comply with safety regulations and technical standards.
  • Building robust shutdown and outage management programs with clear scopes, timelines, and contractor coordination.
  • Leading the integration of predictive diagnostics and condition-based monitoring tools.
  • Driving continuous improvement using lean principles, KPIs, and performance tracking.
  • Transitioning the organization from reactive to proactive maintenance approaches.
  • Mentoring supervisors, technical staff, and skilled trades to strengthen leadership and technical expertise.
  • Managing CMMS systems to ensure planning accuracy and data-driven decision-making.

  • Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial Engineering (or related technical discipline).
  • 10+ years of progressive maintenance leadership experience in a large-scale industrial manufacturing environment.
  • Proven success in improving reliability, reducing costs, and extending asset life.
  • Hands-on experience with predictive technologies and modern maintenance systems.
  • Skilled in managing within unionised environments, with a solid understanding of labour relations.
  • Background in lean maintenance, Six Sigma, or other continuous improvement frameworks.
  • Strong leadership presence, communication skills, and cross-functional collaboration capabilities.
  • Analytic mindset with a focus on results, planning, and risk management.
Our client is a well-established industrial manufacturing operation in Canada, with a long-standing presence in its region and a strong legacy of production. Recently operating under a new structure backed by an international group, the site is focused on operational excellence, sustainability, and workforce development. The facility includes both pulp and paper production and operates at a large scale with multiple interconnected departments.
  • Base salary starting from CAD $160,000, depending on experience.
