The professorial rank will be determined according to the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience. This will be a three-year, renewable appointment and does not confer eligibility for tenure.The Department of Pediatric Surgery is a leader in academic surgery. Our educational and research missions support excellent and innovative clinical programs across our teaching hospitals. The Montreal Children’s Hospital (MCH) of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) is one of McGill’s major teaching hospitals affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec. All pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties are represented at the MCH.The Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery is clinically and academically composed of an outstanding group of four neurosurgeons, with an externally-funded fundamental and clinical research portfolio and particularly in functional surgery research (for epilepsy and spasticity), and expertise in neuroimaging, electrophysiology, and novel intraoperative adjuncts (e.g., Raman spectroscopy, intraoperative MRI, and robot-surgical assistance) to make pediatric neurosurgery safer and more effective. Strongly committed to multi-disciplinary patient well-being, the Division provides high-quality outpatient and inpatient care, offering the full range of pediatric neurosurgery services for all such pathologies including hydrocephalus, brain and spinal tumors, trauma, spasticity, vascular neurosurgery, congenital malformations, and craniosynostosis, among others. The Division participates in McGill University’s fully accredited Royal College Neurosurgery Residency program, and has a highly-touted and competitive Pediatric Neurosurgery Fellowship program of its own. Members of the division are involved in diverse scholarly activities at the hospital and the University as well as nationally and internationally.As a clinician-scientist, the successful candidate will become a member of the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC), joining one of the eight active research programs at the RI-MUHC. In keeping with our research profile and desired direction, we are seeking a pediatric neurosurgeon clinician-scientist with training and experience, as well as an established early research career (i.e., publications, previous funding) in functional neurosurgery investigation and in particular, computer-brain interface paradigms and technology, which can potentially be developed for the treatment of epilepsy, movement disorders, and neurodivergent disorders (e.g., attention deficit disorder).Job DutiesThe successful candidate will be involved in the academic activities of the McGill University Department of Pediatric Surgery, Division of Neurosurgery located at the Montreal Children’s Hospital (MCH), McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). As a clinician-scientist, the incumbent would be expected to commit 50%-75% of their time to research. All pediatric neurosurgeons are expected to share equally in on call duties, keeping in mind the 50-75% protected time for clinician-scientists as described above. The incumbent will also be expected to participate in clinical and administrative division meetings.Supervision of undergraduate and graduate trainees and participation in the pediatric neurosurgery subspecialty training program is also expected. Physicians in the Division of Neurosurgery are also expected to contribute to our interdisciplinary education mission, supporting the education and professional development of nurses and nurse practitioners.Clinician-scientists are expected to apply for salary support from the FRQS and to eventually obtain external operating grants (e.g., CIHR) for their research.The successful candidate will also be expected to be actively involved in relevant aspects of McGill’s academic mission (e.g., research, teaching, supervision of students and residents, and involvement in academic and administrative committees).McGill faculty members are expected to contribute to service activities within their units, the University, and the wider scholarly community. A demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion is also expected.Qualifications and Education RequirementsCandidates must:
  • Hold an MD degree (or equivalent) and a PhD degree;
  • Have certification by the Collège des médecins du Québec or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent);
  • Must hold or be eligible for licensure to practice medicine in the province of Quebec;
  • Have postgraduate clinical training in Neurosurgery (i.e., successfully completed Neurosurgery Residency training, with certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent);
  • Have completed Fellowship training in Pediatric Neurosurgery;
  • Have completed at least three years of research training in addition to their clinical training;
  • Possessing relevant research experience and training in functional neurosurgery and computer-brain interface systems will be considered an asset;
  • Have demonstrated success at publishing high-quality peer-reviewed scientific publications and obtaining competitive research grants;
  • Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families, and health care professionals.
