The Thales Ottawa office has been a major supplier and long-term trusted partner to DND, enabling the Canadian Armed Forces and the Canadian Coast Guard to achieve mission success.Data Engineer (New Grad)Position SummaryOttawa, Ontario (Hybrid)The Data Engineer will be involved in the data engineering activities in support of innovation projects that contribute to naval platforms in-service support programs. As part of the Innovation Team, the new grad will help deliver value to the operational team quickly in an agile and incremental way. More specifically, the Data Engineer will work with business analysts and operational stakeholders to identify problems and find relevant data solutions that can be put in production. The type of solutions could range from implementing data pipelines, deploying machine learning models, implementing software that helps with decision making – while using modern development techniques and technologies.Key Areas of Responsibility
  • Contribute to the definition of a data platform architecture that is suitable for the business needs of the program;
  • Support data initiatives such as Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) of complex assets;
  • Contribute to the deployment and maintenance of tools part of the TCDS data platform;
  • Develop ETL/ELT pipelines, data mappings and lineage, and data quality rules;
  • Deploy and monitor AI models in production.
  • Work on well-defined projects with minimal supervision;
Minimum Qualifications
  • Recent graduate from software engineering, computer science or related field.
  • Experience with data science techniques and toolsets such as Argo, dbt, Nifi, Jupyter Notebook,
data modeling techniques and languages, scripting technologies such as Python, R;
  • Knowledge of agile software engineering methodologies;
  • Capable of developing strong relationships across the business through excellent customer service;
Preferred QualificationsExperience with:
  • Military (ideally Navy)
  • Software engineering;
  • ERPs such as SAP, IBM Maximo;
  • Artificial intelligence techniques and toolsets.
Education:
  • Undergraduate degree in mathematics, physics or a related field.
