As a Junior Telecom Engineer, you will support the design, development, and implementation of telecommunications systems that enable critical utility operations. Working within a multidisciplinary engineering team, you will contribute to reliable, secure, and high-performance telecom infrastructure supporting grid operations, SCADA systems, and communication networks. You will work under the guidance of senior engineers while progressively taking on more responsibility across design, field support, and project execution.Key Responsibilities
- Support the design and development of telecommunications networks and circuits for utility applications
- Assist in engineering studies, analysis, and problem-solving using established methods and standards
- Contribute to the preparation of engineering drawings, material lists, and specifications for telecom infrastructure
- Support material ordering, tracking, and management for construction activities
- Participate in the implementation of systems including fiber optics, microwave, LTE, satellite, IP/MPLS, and radio networks
- Collaborate with Project Managers and construction teams to ensure projects meet safety, cost, and schedule targets
- Provide field support during installation, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting of telecom systems
- Conduct site visits and perform construction quality control and compliance monitoring
- Assist in resolving technical issues and support maintenance and emergency restoration activities
- Ensure all engineering work complies with applicable standards, including BC Hydro and EGBC requirements
- Maintain accurate project documentation in accordance with regulatory and organizational standards
- Work under the supervision of a Professional Engineer, with work reviewed for accuracy and adherence to standards
- Apply engineering standards, procedures, and best practices in all deliverables
- Follow EGBC guidelines and operate within BC Hydro's Professional Practice Management Plan
- Ensure proper documentation retention in compliance with EGBC bylaws
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline
- Minimum of 2 years of relevant engineering experience in telecommunications or a related field
- Registered as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or eligible for registration with Engineers & Geoscientists BC
- Experience working in a telecom environment within a power utility (strong asset)
- Knowledge of TCP/IP networking fundamentals
- Familiarity with CAD systems and engineering drawing standards
- Experience using standard engineering design and analysis tools
- Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
- Valid Class 5 Driver's License in good standing
- Exposure to telecom technologies such as:
- Fiber optic networks (DWDM/OTN)
- Microwave radio systems
- LTE and WiMAX networks
- Satellite and Power Line Carrier systems
- SONET/PDH and digital cross-connect systems
- TETRA/VHF/UHF radio systems
- Teleprotection systems and -48V DC power systems
- Understanding of IP/MPLS networking concepts including IPv4/IPv6, OSPF, IS-IS, BGP, MPLS/VPN, QoS, and Traffic Engineering
- Experience with Nokia MPLS or Cisco networking equipment
- Strong problem-solving ability and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently while collaborating within a team environment
- Basic understanding of project management, contract administration, and construction practices
- Ability to take initiative while working under guidance on complex technical tasks
