- Perform gross examinations of surgical specimen, selects, dissects and prepare tissue sections for further processing and examination
- Prioritize and expeditiously gross all specimens including stat cases
- Provide accurate and efficient gross descriptions of all surgical specimens by documenting gross findings in accordance with descriptions in the laboratory manuals procedures and protocols
- Review clinical history provided
- Print and prepare tissue cassettes, submit tissue in cassettes for histological examination as required
- Use positive patient identification to ensure that all requisitions and worksheets (electronic or paper), specimens, portions are traceable
- Set up and operate laboratory equipment in preparation for specimen examinations
- Load tissue processors assuring correct end times
- Maintain accurate records and documentation for activities in their area
- Open, separate, number and arrange specimens for laboratory examination and trace results
- Maintain simple laboratory records and inventory for supplies and reagents
- Maintain laboratory equipment and supplies by cleaning and maintaining quality assurance records
- Maintain a clean and sanitary work area in accordance with standard laboratory practice and procedures
- Photograph baskets of cassettes before loading into tissue processers
- Participate in all quality assurance programs and ensures company and Ministry of Health guidelines are observed
- Maintain knowledge of current policies and procedures in their assigned work area; complete action items, read work-related emails, attend staff meetings, stay informed, etc.
- Use or wear equipment, protective devices or clothing that is required to be used or worn to ensure safety
- Ensuring quality control standards are maintained and performing routine maintenance on laboratory equipment
- Monitor the absence of or defect in any equipment, protective device or hazard of which the employee is aware and which may endanger oneself or another employee
- Perform other duties as required
- Ensure work completion - adjusting day to day work schedules to accommodate unexpected absences to ensure adequate coverage and motivation staff to achieve productivity goals
- Actively participate in departmental projects to achieve departmental goals
- Responsible for senior review of maintenance and QC for specific areas of responsibility
- Knowledge of Histology
- Minimum 2 years of experience as a Pathology Assistant
- Knowledge of Medical terminology and Gross Anatomy and dissection techniques
- Strong knowledge of Microanatomy
- Graduate of an approved Laboratory Sciences program or equivalent
- Bachelor of Science in Biology or equivalent education directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified
- Proven excellence working in team environment, strong interpersonal and communication skills and professionalism
- CAP certification is beneficial
- Excellent computer skills
- Ability to prioritize specimens for processing
- Proven ability to perform duties independently or as a team member with high degree of motivation
- Demonstrated problem solving skills, able to exercise independent judgment within scope of practice
- Demonstrated commitment to professional self- development
- Ability to multi- task and perform under pressure while ensuring the integrity of the test results in a fast paced environment
- Long periods of concentration required
- Medical laboratory environment
- Perform duties in stationary standing/sitting positions with repetitive fine motor movement of hands
- High visual requirements
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. (pounds)
- Exposure to biohazard materials and noise
- Shift work required
- Possible exposure to chemicals, solvents and radioactive materials
