- Take patients’ general medical and ophthalmic history
- Operate ophthalmic testing and measuring instruments to aid in assessing patients’ vision
- Instruct patients on diagnostic test and record results
- Administer eye drops, ointments and medications as directed by the professionals
- Clean and maintain ophthalmic instruments and equipment
- Perform various administrative duties
- Manage dispensary: frames/lens inventory, training/managing fellow optical dispensers, dispensing patients into suitable glasses and lenses
- Operate and train team members on diagnostic optometry equipment/tests, record results to aid optometrists in assessing patients' vision and eye health
- Schedule and confirm appointments
- Perform general clerical duties
- Maintain inventory of equipment
- Manage routine office functions including reception, telephone and booking appointments
- Order supplies and equipment
- Obtain specifications for eyeglasses or contact lenses from a prescription prepared by an Ophthalmologist and take necessary measurements.
- Advise clients on eyeglasses selection by informing them of different products such as lens materials, frames, tints and anti-reflection coating.
- Adjust contact lenses and inform client on use and care.
- May supervise or manage the activities of other opticians or student opticians.
