The Research Education Coordinator supports all research education programs offered by the Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute (VCHRI). This position is responsible for leading and ensuring the successful management of the daily operations of research education programs and conducting evaluation of these activities. This role provides recommendations to VCHRI management and staff to support continual improvement of research educational programs. The role is expected to function independently, with guidance from the Director.Organizational StatusVancouver Coastal Health Research Institute (VCHRI) is the research arm of Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) and a health partner of the University of British Columbia (UBC). We are a significant part of B.C.’s health research industry and a major health research institute in Canada.The position reports to the Executive Director, VCHRI and with day-to-day functional reporting to the Director, Research Development and Strategic Partnership and works closely with all staff within the VCHRI administration team.Work PerformedResearch Education Programming:
  • Develops in partnership with all VCHRI administration portfolios, identifies scope and objectives, prepares education brief, implements and evaluates the VCHRI research education programs.
  • Identifies education needs based on specific requests and feedback from current program evaluations and assists in developing appropriate curriculum by providing recommendations on the improvement and changes to existing programs.
  • Leads the development and delivery of clinical research education programs to build research capacity among staff and trainees, including educational materials for workshops, classroom and on-line learning.
  • Manages access to online educational platforms for VCH researcher and staff, including learning hub, CITI training, N2 and CANTRAIN clinical trials training program.
  • Leads facilitation of workshops and grant development sessions to support teams applying for the practice-based research programs (e.g., Research Challenge and Knowledge Translation Challenge).
  • Creates education and research collaborations in the four VCH communities of care, professional practice and external researchers/institutions.
  • Collaborates on development of training initiatives for knowledge mobilization and evidence to practice.
  • Leads planning committee for research education and events, in collaboration with other health authorities, research institutes and the UBC Faculty of Medicine.
  • Leads planning of annual research day, with direction from the Director, and works in collaboration with other VCHRI admin portfolios.
  • Schedules internal instructors based on course curriculum requirements and sources external instructors when no suitable internal subject matter experts are available.
  • Manages and oversees all aspects of education sessions such as registration and payments, attendance, location, equipment requirements, advertising and budgeting; acts as onsite resource contact during all sessions.
  • Evaluates course feedback and makes recommendations to management for continuous improvement of research education programs.
  • Chairs and facilitates VCHRI trainee committee and associated meetings, drives networking and professional development activities, and connects with VCHRI Centre and Program trainee groups to foster collaboration and career development.
  • Oversee the budget for trainee committee activities, and reviews reimbursement requests and their approval.
  • Planning of internal and public VCHRI research events in collaboration with internal VCHRI teams, including communications.
  • Liaisons with external groups for education (e.g., Michael Smith Health Research BC)
  • Communicates external educational opportunities to VCHRI staff, researchers and physicians.
Communication:
  • Works in collaboration with the Director as well as the VCHRI Communications team to develop and deliver the communication plans and key messaging for education programs by writing and editing a variety of documents including reports, announcements and content for the VCHRI web page.
  • Responds to internal and external inquiries and initiates fact finding to resolve issues of a non-routine nature.
  • Carries out responsibilities in accordance with health and safety requirements. Immediately reports unsafe situations by notifying supervisor or other appropriate personnel.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
The incumbent in this role must exercise a high degree of confidence, autonomy, and independence while working within broad guidelines. A very high standard of professional communication is required. Poor decisions or lack of tact, diplomacy, or sensitivity in dealing with internal and external stakeholders, such as academic and healthcare institutions, hospital foundations, and research entities, could result in missed opportunities, damaged relationships, and significant loss of creditability for VCHRI.Supervision Received

May supervise students and volunteers.Minimum Qualifications
  • University degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of related experience in a research environment assisting in developing and delivering education activities and research administration to health care professionals and researchers or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience is preferred.
  • Ability to interact effectively and positively with staff, researchers and managers.
  • Develops and maintains strong relationships with key internal and external partners to promote and enhance services provided with sensitivity to diversity and indigenous lens.
  • Practices the recognition, inclusion and support of all types and aspects of diversity at all stages of engagement, with an understanding of the issues faced by people from equity-deserving groups.
  • Ability to makes independent decisions, using sound judgment and ability to communicate with a broad range of individuals from various disciplines.
  • Ability to work both independently, as well as work effectively with other internal and external stakeholders outside the organization such as academic and healthcare institutions, hospital foundations and research entities.
  • Uses initiative, and sets own priorities based on workload and competing deadlines.
  • Ability to exercise tact, discretion and diplomacy and to maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive organizational information.
  • Demonstrates strong organizational, analytical and interpersonal skills.
  • Effective computer skills with excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.
  • Ability to triage/prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
