Oversees the operation and maintenance of all equipment including housing system, manure disposal, grading system, refrigeration, and ventilation systems. Remains available to be on a regular on-call rotation to assist staff after hours and on week-ends. Organizes, distributes and verifies the work of others and participates in their training. Performs technical and animal husbandry duties related to housing and maintenance. Participates in projects and experiments. Administers medications. Acts as resource person. Maintains records. Maintains equipment.Major Duties and Responsibilities:Oversees the day-to-day operations of the Shaver Poultry Complex. Organizes, distributes and verifies the work of others and participates in their training. Monitor progress.Provide ongoing technical guidance and instruction on work methods and feeding procedures. Monitors feed inventory; prepares feed requirement forecasts; orders bagged & bulk feeds, & bedding.Participates in certain physically demanding tasks such as filling and sealing silos, loading/unloading hay, straw, wood and paper bedding.Provides support with research projects, at times with requirements to feed special diets, collect samples, examine and/or move animals, modify installations and accurately record data according to protocol.Conducts teaching labs for degree and diploma classes on topics such as ration formulation, feed storage, health monitoring, manure, ventilation and feeding systems.Participates in instruction and training of student interns and verifies their work with a written evaluation.Performs technical duties related to animal husbandry such as administration of medications, monitoring animal health, routine animal care, various daily chores (collecting eggs, monitoring temperature, handling birds and cleaning barn and replacing bedding when needed).Observes and notes birds’ behaviour. Verifies feed and water consumption. Performs basic examinations.Maintains records pertaining to animal populations, required supplies, experimental data, etc. Prepares activity reports.Ensures sufficient inventory and purchase of all animal care supplies, equipment and materials.Oversees general maintenance of equipment in the Poultry unit.Implements a regular maintenance schedule for equipment and maintains records of maintenance/repairs done. Inspects and ensures functioning of equipment, pumps, ventilation fans, conveyors, silos, etc. Operates equipment in the unit (skid steer, loader tractor, pressure washing equipment, etc.).Remains familiar with poultry SOPs and ensures adherence to safety and waste management procedures.
