Description :At SMS Equipment, we are committed to building a strong and sustainable Heavy Equipment Technician (HET) workforce from within. The Apprentice Development Lead plays a critical role in strengthening our internal talent pipeline by accelerating apprentice progression, improving program consistency, and reducing reliance on external hiring. This role operates at an enterprise level, partnering closely with Service Operations, Workforce Development, and Training to ensure apprentices progress efficiently toward Journeyperson certification while meeting all provincial requirements.Work Location: Acheson, AB
Salary: $70,000 to $80,000 per annum
Work Arrangement: · Hybrid – providing the flexibility to work remotely up to 2 days per week
Schedule: Monday – Friday, with occasional evening and weekends
Travel: Some national travel required to partner colleges and branch locationsWhat You’ll Do
  • Coordinate and oversee enterprise-wide HET apprenticeship programs, including traditional, accelerated, and fast-track development pathways.
  • Monitor apprentice progress against hours, schooling, competencies, and certification milestones, ensuring regulatory compliance across provinces.
  • Identify and support apprentices and experienced technicians eligible for accelerated progression, advanced placement, or Red Seal exam challenges.
  • Partner with branch leadership, trainers, mentors, and Talent Acquisition to deliver a consistent apprentice experience across regions.
  • Support onboarding and transition of new hires, including high school, college, and external experienced worker intakes.
  • Conduct regular check-ins with apprentices to promote engagement, clarity, and retention
  • Identify progression risks or barriers and escalate issues with recommendations for action.
  • Analyze apprentice pipeline data and contribute insights to workforce planning, reporting, and continuous improvement initiatives.
What You BringThe successful candidate brings a strong understanding of apprenticeship systems and skilled trades development, paired with the ability to influence, coordinate, and problem-solve across diverse stakeholder groups. They are organized, data-informed, and passionate about developing internal talent to meet long-term workforce needs.
  • Post-secondary education or equivalent experience in Trades, Workforce Development, Education, or HR
  • Experience coordinating apprenticeship, technical training, or workforce development programs
  • Strong knowledge of provincial apprenticeship and skilled trades certification frameworks
  • Heavy Equipment Technician (HET) trade knowledge or exposure considered a strong asset
  • Proven ability to work cross-functionally with operations, training, and HR partners
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills
  • Comfort navigating ambiguity, managing competing priorities, and escalating issues appropriately
  • Experience supporting accelerated development or fast-track training models preferred
