For more information, visit .POSITION SUMMARY:This is an exciting opportunity for passionate, self-directed nursing, paramedic, and medical students to join our interprofessional team as a Clinical Extern. As a member of the health care team, the Clinical Extern opportunity will give you hands-on patient care experience, insight into the bedside care environment and further exposure to Joseph Brant Hospital. All positions are temporary. The Clinical Extern supports care needs within the Transitional Care department. The Clinical Extern will work in the capacity as an unregulated health care provider. They work in collaboration with the units’ interprofessional team under direct and/or indirect supervision of a registered nursing professional.RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Practice as part of the interprofessional team
- Assist with basic patient care/clinical tasks under the supervision of registered nursing professionals (bathing/hygiene, personal care; turning and repositioning; transfers using lifts and other transfer devices; basic skin care; setting up patients for meals and assisting where necessary; purposeful rounding, answering call bells)
- Contribute to Transfer of Accountability (TOA) nurse to nurse shift report under the assignment and direct supervision of the RN or RPN
- Provide care tasks including but not limited to: vital signs, physical assessment, priming and setting up IV tubing, charting, and non-urgent patient transfers when deemed appropriate by registered nurse professionals
- All responsibilities, assigned and supervised by a Registered nursing professionals
- Communicating & collaborating with the interprofessional team
- Documentation related to the patient care they provide
- Reporting changes in patient status to the most responsible nurse for best patient care
- Student enrolled in Practical Nursing, baccalaureate nursing, paramedic or medical education program (year 2 or above)
- Familiarity with computer applications or willingness to learn computer skills as required
- Effective communication (verbal and written), interpersonal, teamwork skills within an interdisciplinary health care team
- Excellent problem solving, conflict management and communication skills
- Ability to perform verbal de-escalation strategies with patients and families
- Demonstrated initiative and judgment appropriate for the position
- Ability to accept assignment or delegated functions
- Ability to set priorities and organize work accordingly
- Ability to deal with various hospital departments effectively and collaboratively
- Ability to lift using appropriate techniques and bend, push and pull using good body mechanics
- A good attendance and work record is essential
