Job Summary & Key ResponsibilitiesThe successful candidate will be expected to deliver engaging physiology courses to large, first-year students, (Human Physiology 1 (PHYL 1001, 1011) and Human Physiology 2 (1002, 1012)), in accordance with established learning objectives and syllabi, in the fall 2024 and winter 2025.In collaboration with a faculty member, duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Design and implement active learning tasks to support and encourage students' learning of physiological concepts in face-to-face, hybrid, and online educational settings.
  • Implement, manage, and fairly evaluate diverse assessments in accordance with the established syllabi.
  • Administrative duties related to the assigned courses (e.g. grade submission).
  • Hire, train, manage, and supervise a team of teaching assistants (TAs) to support the face-to-face, hybrid, and online delivery of first-year physiology courses.
  • Communicate promptly and respectfully with a diverse body of students, both in person and via technology (e.g. email, video meetings, etc.), with the aim to support students' course experience.
  • Work collaboratively with other faculty members to ensure consistent and effective delivery of instruction.
  • Use course-specific Brightspace sites to communicate with students about course-related matters, and enhance the delivery of instruction.
  • Create safe, respectful, and welcoming learning environments so that all students - including under-represented groups - feel supported and valued.
Qualifications/Requirements of Position
  • MSc in Physiology or related field. PhD in Physiology or related field is preferred.
  • Prior experience with post-secondary instruction. Prior experience as a teaching assistant in first-year physiology courses at Dalhousie is a strong asset.
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness and/or evidence-based teaching at the post-secondary level.
  • Experience with first-year undergraduate students situation, challenges, and opportunities.
  • Ability and motivation to deliver high-quality instruction both face-to-face and via technology (including, but not limited to, Brightspace, Collaborate, Panopto).
  • Ability and motivation to relate to and communicate effectively with large classes of first-year students.
  • Ability and motivation to create safe, respectful, and student-centred learning environments.
  • Availability to teach in-person at pre-determined times (Mondays and Fridays from 2:35-3:25PM during the fall semester and Mondays 2:35-3:25PM & Fridays 1:35-2:25PM during the winter semester) on Dalhousie's Halifax campus.
Salary Range/Pay Rate Per CUPE Collective Agreement
