At ALS, we encourage you to dream big.When you join us, you’ll be part of a global team harnessing the power of scientific testing and data-driven insights to build a healthier future.Location: ALS Mine Site, Baffinland (fly in/out of St. Hubert-Montreal, QC)Reports to: Mine Lab Manager/Supervisor, BaffinlandGeneral Accountability:The Mine Site Lab Technician is responsible for the preparation and analysis of client samples, while ensuring that timely and quality results are reported to the client.About the Site:
  • Employees work a 21 day in / 21 day out shift rotation on the mine site. Hours of work are between 6:30am-6:30pm, or 6:30pm-6:30am.
  • For candidates not living near Montreal, ALS covers the travel cost to and from Montreal. Eligible candidates also will receive 5 hours of pay from home lab to Montreal.
  • Lodging and meals provided during the 3 week work period. The site offers a full service cafeteria that provides meals at set hours while other snacks/beverages are available 24 hours per day.
  • A full service medical facility, laundry facilities, recreation and fitness center are on site.
  • Bedding will be provided. You are responsible for providing your own toiletries and towels.
  • Baffinland is located in the extreme north, flight departure delays can happen.
  • Wi-Fi is available on site, with restriction on live streaming, downloading, and Skype.
  • Telephones are available on-site for staff use.
  • You are not able to travel off the mine site while on your 3 week work period. All facilities are within a few minutes walking distance from one another.
  • A COVID19 pre-screen is done at the airport prior to boarding the plane to site. Employees will be tested for COVID19 upon arrival at the mine-site and are expected to adhere to all mine-site pandemic protocols.
  • A pre-access medical screening will need to be completed. Employment is contingent on Baffinland medic granting access to site.
Specific Responsibilities:Sample Preparation:
  • Layout samples for analysis;
  • Data entry of sample information;
  • Use heavy machinery to ring, sieve, crush, and split geological samples
  • Load and unload drying ovens;
  • Maintain production and analysis logs;
  • Ensure all prepared and available samples are accounted for in the lab;
  • Prioritize workloads according to daily stats and turnaround commitments;
  • Perform basic routine maintenance on all sample preparation equipment, support equipment, and instrumentation;
  • Dispose sample rejects according to client instruction.
Laboratory Analysis:
  • Operate and perform analysis using Katanax Fuser, XRF, LOI furnace, Satmagan, pH meter, and etc.;
  • Identify & correct Quality Control related problems by ensuring the quality of the analytical data meets ALS standards;
  • Evaluate data using instrument software and GEMS and EvoLIMS;
  • Use Microsoft Excel and Word to create written reports;
  • Ensure all prepared and available samples are accounted for in the lab;
  • Prioritize workloads according to daily stats and turnaround commitments;
  • Maintain and organize production logs and equipment records;
  • Perform basic routine maintenance on all sample preparation equipment, support equipment, and analytical instrumentation;
General:
  • ALS staff are responsible to keep the laboratory clean, this will require staff to ensure lab cleanliness to prevent contamination of samples;
  • Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;
  • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;
  • Handle basic internal problem solving;
  • Perform duties in accordance with SOP and quality control procedures;
  • Discard samples after analysis completed according to standard operating procedures;
  • Minimize wastage of chemicals and consumables in the laboratory and reducing breakdowns and downtime.
  • Optimize turnaround time for samples while ensuring the highest quality of results is achieved and maintained;
  • Coordinate the correct labelling and disposal of laboratory waste products per procedures, regulations or MSDS instructions;
  • Ensure the cleanliness, housekeeping and presentation off all equipment and work areas;
  • Observes established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Excellent time management and planning skills, strong attention to detail;
  • Have excellent command of the English language, strong verbal and written communication skills;
  • Strong customer service focus, interpersonal and organizational abilities;
  • Demonstrated judgement, creativity, integrity and ability to problem solve;
  • Excellent computer skills including MS Word and Excel,
  • Ability to effectively handle escalations and time critical issues.
Required Qualifications:
  • Completion of technical diploma or BSc degree in chemistry or related field, or equivalent education;
  • Demonstrated and relevant laboratory experience, ideally up to two years in a geochemical laboratory;
  • Experience with XRF, LECO carbon/sulfur, sample preparation & layout, geochem or environmental workorder entry is an asset
Physical Demands:
  • This position requires mobility to climb, lift, pull, drive, sit and/or stand for up to 12 hours per day.
  • Must be able to work on shift schedule of 21 days in 21 days out.
  • Ability to work in a dusty environment;
  • Manual dexterity to perform repetitive technical tasks;
  • Must be able to regularly lift up to 15 kg.
  • Ability to lift up to 22 kg. (occasionally lifting may exceed 22 kg. and assistance is mandatory from either another employee or the lift assist equipment);
  • Be cleanly-shaven in order to wear protective equipment.
