Degree Level: High School Diploma/GEDJob Description:Victoria Shipyards is looking for a Rigging Apprentice!Duties and Responsibilities
  • Working under the supervision of another Rigger and a crane operator, the rigging apprentice is responsible for hooking up slings/chains, attaching shackles, tending the hooks and spotting for the crane operator while moving various loads between the dock and a vessel.
  • Guide loads carried by the crane with tag lines.
  • With the use of chain hoists, come alongs, and other various hoists, required to transfer machinery, pieces of material or any other heavy or awkward object either into or out of the vessel. Includes all areas not accessed by overhead cranes, boom cranes and typically inside confined spaces with numerous obstacles (i.e. Vessels holds, tanks, engine rooms etc.)
  • Use of handheld radios to communicate with other Riggers and crane operators.
  • Required to access all areas of vessels, including use of side shell ladders, Jacob's ladders, vertical ladders, staging, dock bottom stairs, man lifts and scissor lifts.
  • Required to climb and walk along precipices and at heights.
  • Pulling tie up lines during docking and undocking.
  • Required to lift and carry all required equipment into and out of the vessel or dock bottom.
  • Follow all safe work practices and procedures.

  • Ability to obtain security clearance is a requirement
Shifts can extend to 12 hrs from standard 8 hrs depending on project with weekend work as projects require. Shifts can be either day shift or night shift as projects require.Schooling and Red seal trade certificate:
  • School is located at BCIT in Vancouver, for the Ironworker Generalist Course.
  • Accommodations are the responsibility of the apprentice.
  • Victoria Shipyards pays 40% of wages while in school as an EI top up.
Based on the current Collective Agreement, starting apprentice wage rates are between 55% - 90% of the full journeyperson rate ($48.87 before deductions). Relevant experience, most recent level of apprentice schooling completed, and number of hours recorded with Skilled Trades BC will be considered.
