Together we are more than 5,000 dedicated faculty, librarians and staff supporting the University of Victoria's diverse academic programs, world-class research and commitment to civic engagement.Job SummaryReporting to the Network Services Technician Supervisor, the Electronics Technician works independently and as part of a team to ensure the operational effectiveness of the campus data and voice communications networks and their connections to external networks, as well as internet and research networks through BCNET.Acts as a specialized, technical resource to staff, faculty and students with communication related equipment requiring installation, diagnoses and service. Works with clients and Network Services Analysts to determine specifics of communication failures. Diagnoses hardware and cable infrastructure failures for network connectable devices such as VoIP Phones, IP cameras, Wireless Access Points and Antennas, Uninterruptable Power Supplies, Voice Gateways, Routers and Switches.Our normal business hours are 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM, system maintenance may be performed off-hours and major issues are responded to on a 24/7 basis.Job RequirementsSkills:
  • Strong analytical skills;
  • Exceptional communication skills;
  • Ability to adapt quickly to a fast paced environment;
  • Ability to maintain a safe working environment and safe work habits in working conditions including exposure to dust, high voltage, glass fiber or chemical cleaning agents;
  • Good physical health, sufficient strength, stamina and coordination to perform a variety of routine heavy manual tasks continuously.
Specialized Knowledge/Education:
  • Technical Institute Diploma, trade qualifications or equivalent training in electronics.
  • In-depth knowledge of copper and fibre-optic cable standards.
  • fibre-optic cable installation experience,
  • copper cable infrastructure installation experience, and,
  • TE Enterprise Networks Registered Installer certifications.
  • Knowledge of networking components.
  • Knowledge of LAN/WAN standards, TCP/IP principles and wireless standards.
  • Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and precautionary measures relative to work practices.
Experience:
  • 3 years of related work experience.
