We are currently recruiting for a Piping Checker. Our team includes world class experts and dynamic go-getters. This is a full-time position based in Sarnia, Ontario.Responsibilities:
  • Primary responsibility will be checking of project drawings. May participate in discipline team supervision (lead) by directing project execution activities and discipline deliverable creation for one large or several smaller projects. Completes discipline technical work for projects, as time permits.
  • Assists business development activities by maintaining an up-to-date personal profile and resume. Builds positive working relationships with external parties such as the customer, suppliers, and contractors. Supports proposals by advising on the project execution strategy, estimating costs, writing proposal content, and presenting to customers. May be called upon to lead all or part of a proposal.
  • Ensures team member adherence to generally accepted engineering and design practices, regulatory requirements, and customer specifications. Supports the standardization of equipment specifications, drawings, and document templates. Contributes to the understanding of technical knowledge, legal requirements, and customer specifications whenever viable and lawful. Uses local/global standards to support technical excellence. Supports checking, peer reviews, and incorporation of comments and findings.
  • May participate in project execution strategy and planning. Knows the project and owns the discipline scope/cost/time requirements, makes certain the team meets expectations, and coordinates with other disciplines to ensure project success. Drives innovative solutions, technology advances, and methods to effectively deal with working out of sequence. Supports management of project change and progressing for the discipline and works with the Project Management Team to take corrective actions regarding any issues, staffing requirements, scope changes, progressing, or other events that could affect project completion and/or profitability. Plans discipline quality, monitors quality activities, drives and participates in squad checking, recommends improvements, and acts where required.
  • Enables data gathering and the preparation of analyses, calculations, etc. Assists with recommendations and helps create final documentation. Ensures technical issues are defined with alternate solutions, pros/cons established for multiple solutions, and recommendations made to support official project documents such as technical queries, technical deviations, etc. Ensures final documentation incorporates all relevant information and internal authorization is obtained. Reviews and authorizes work done by direct reports.
  • Ensures relevant information is incorporated into equipment/material specifications, data sheets, testing requirements, and material requisitions. Enables bid clarifications, bid evaluations, inter-discipline vendor information review and other certification activities. Reviews and authorizes work done by direct reports.
  • Seeks input from knowledgeable sources, participates in constructability, operability, and maintainability reviews, and ensures that requirements are incorporated into design. May work with site personnel to resolve issues. May create plans or documents that supports construction, testing, commissioning, operations, maintenance, or decommissioning. May provide or lead on-site support for construction, commissioning, or turn over.
  • Preparation of design drawings and documentation, including line and material lists using project specifications in accordance with established design practices, standards, and procedures.
  • Planning and scheduling of design tasks associated with assigned project or area.
  • Fully understanding the project scope of work and identifying potential changes utilizing the project change control process.
  • Understanding of construction work packaging requirements and organizing construction documentation to support construction and commissioning.
  • Advising the Discipline Lead and Project Manager about status of assignment(s) with respect to schedule, budgets, delays, and adverse problems.
  • Full understanding of the use of requisitions and the role of materials management.
  • Maintaining the 3D model environment, including the creation and maintenance of electronic piping material specifications.
  • Facilitating and navigating 3D model reviews, both internal and client.
  • Coordinating work between various disciplines and interdisciplinary checking.
  • Checking work of, and assist in training of, less experienced design personnel.
QualificationsWhat you will bring:
Technical and Industry Experience:
  • Piping Design Checker with minimum 20 years of design experience and a minimum of 5-years checking experience in a petrochemical/hydrocarbon’s environment or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Refinery site experience is a must, and must be proficient at working with laser scans.
  • This position involves the checking and design and drafting of 3D CAD based equipment and piping for the energy, oil, gas and petrochemical industry facility projects independently or with assigned designers and drafters, including those located in remote offices and high value engineering centers.
  • Although the main function of this role is for checking all piping deliverables as required, you may be assigned 3-D Modelling work quality piping deliverables including but not limited to plot plans, plan views and sections, isometric drawings, and layouts.
  • Needs to be fluent in all design tools (software) Plant 3-D and Cadworks experience is an asset.
Other requirements:
  • Must have excellent interpersonal communication skills; maintain good interaction between clients and team members.
  • Able to work minimum 40 hours per week, overtime as required up to 50 hours per week.
  • Must demonstrate an excellent safety-oriented mindset.
  • Must have a proven safety record.
  • Must have valid driving license.
  • Technical school graduate with specific discipline training.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office, Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Able to work independently.
Education – Qualifications, Accreditation, Training:Required:
  • Certificate or diploma in process piping design, mechanical technician or technologist or equivalent.
For applicants based in the province of Ontario, the salary range is $154,179 to $204,179 CAD.
