
Specialist, Mechanical Designer

- Responsible for mechanical design and analysis of complex opto-mechanical and electromechanical products from concept through to production using modern tools. Assigned projects will be of an advanced nature and will involve solving difficult technical problems.
- Carries out complex and difficult engineering assignments requiring specialized engineering knowledge. Requires application of advanced engineering knowledge. Assigned projects and problems make it often necessary to modify established methods and devise new approaches. Is relied upon to complete difficult projects in a timely manner.
- A major technical contributor or lead to the completion of project goals and objectives.
- Contributes to the definition of departmental best practices and design approaches.
- Work is assigned in terms of specific objectives and goals with defined boundaries. Work is carried out within wide guidelines. Technical guidance and review is available as required.
- Often gives technical or project related guidance and direction to other staff. May act as a lead on larger projects. May provide guidance or mentor staff on complex design practices and development methods. May provide some level of product level ownership.
- Participate in design reviews as either a presenter or a reviewer.
- Supporting the verification and validation of new product designs.
- Keep in synchronization with mechanical industry trends and new technologies that may be relevant to L3HARRIS Wescam’s present and future product development
- Proficient user of FEA for static and dynamics analysis, preferably ANSYS
- Proficient user of a CFD (computation fluid dynamics) analysis package, preferably ANSYS
- Proficient knowledge of a 3D CAD system, preferably SolidWorks
- Experience with Matlab or an equivalent mathematical application
- Well versed in mechanical dynamics and vibration
- Well versed in strength of materials and classical analysis methods
- Well versed in opto-mechanical design principles
- Well versed in machining, casting, sheet metal, and composites manufacturing techniques and processes
- Well versed in rapid prototyping techniques and methods
- Well versed in Materials Science
- Leadership skills
- Strong communication skills and the ability to prepare detailed technical reports and specifications
- A highly motivated, self-starter
- Ability to learn and grow within a fast paced environment
- Meets the requirements of the Controlled Goods Registration Program and is eligible for a Canadian government security clearance
- Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 4 years of prior relevant experience, or
- Graduate Degree and a minimum of 2 years of prior related experience, or
- In lieu of a degree, minimum of 8 years of prior related experience.
