PURPOSE:The Digital Communications Specialist supports the delivery of the organization’s corporate messaging by creating, updating, and maintaining content across corporate social media channels, and other digital promotion platforms. The role focuses on rapid, day to day execution to ensure digital communications are clear, accurate, timely, and of interest to the library’s target audiences.The position reports to the Director, Marketing and Communications and works closely with other members of the Marketing and Communications Unit and staff across the organization to support communications needs.RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACTIVITIES:Corporate Social Media
  • Develop, manage, and lead an annual social media plan for the organization. Draft, schedule, and publish content for corporate social media channels. Maintain content calendars and ensure posts are timely and accurate.
  • Participate in online discussion as appropriate, and represent the RPL brand in a positive, favourable manner. Ensure responses are accurate and appropriate and provide opportunity to maintain or improve the organization’s reputation.
  • Create clever and engaging short form digital content in keeping with current events, ideas, and online topics of interest. Support subject matter experts in identifying and drafting original digital content.
  • Monitor corporate social media channels, identify and address issues, questions, and trends. Respond to comments and messages in accordance with established guidelines and in keeping with the library’s brand.
  • Keep current on social media trends, updates, and algorithms. Recommend and facilitate changes as necessary.
  • Analyze performance data and generate quarterly reports and recommendations for all digital media performance based on quantitative and qualitative analyses. Apply feedback and performance insights to improve future content.
Content creation, writing, editing, and design
  • Manage corporate customer newsletters. Gather, draft, and edit newsletters to ensure clarity, accuracy, and consistency with approved tone and style. Schedule and distribute library’s e newsletters in a timely manner.
  • Design graphics and templates using Canva, the Adobe creative suite, and other design programs for use in digital and traditional marketing media. Support staff across the organization in templates usage and design questions.
  • Manage use of in-house digital tools such as branch TVs and RPL Film Theatre pre-show promotions to support messaging to customers.
  • Support other MAC staff in delivering timely and relevant advertising and promotions for RPL events, programming, and services.
  • Attend RPL functions, programs, and events to gather video, photos and information for use on social. Speak with participants, customers, and the public about the library, its offerings, and their experiences to create engaging social content.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:Education and experience
  • Degree in marketing, communications, journalism, or related field.
  • A minimum of two or three years’ experience in a corporate social media role with experience integrating an organization’s digital media with other forms of communication and messaging delivery.
  • At least two or three years of professional business writing experience preferably in a marketing and/or communications setting, including responding to emerging issues through quick development and delivery of clever, compelling digital media copy on behalf of an employer/a corporate organization.
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of corporate digital marketing and digital communications principles, including content creation, branding, and audience engagement.
  • Understanding of the ever-changing role of digital communications and promoting/protecting the library’s brand and reputation.
  • Knowledge of corporate social media management and use of social media as an engagement tool for the organization.
  • Knowledge of accessibility, usability, and plain language principles as they apply to digital content.
  • Knowledge of brand standards and visual consistency across digital platforms.
Skills
  • Exceptional writing skills, particularly in a corporate social media setting. Ability to create, edit, and publish digital content for social media, e newsletters, websites, and other digital platforms.
  • Ability to design digital graphics and visual assets using template based tools such as Canva and by following established brand guidelines.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks, deadlines, and content requests.
Abilities
  • Ability to excel in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment with multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to follow established processes, templates, brand standards, and accessibility requirements, and to recommend updates and new ideas as appropriate/necessary.
  • Ability to collaborate with internal staff to gather content and support digital communications needs.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in publishing and maintaining public facing digital content.
