The Faculty of Health Sciences and Human Services includes the Departments of Child and Youth Care, Dental Assistant, Dental Hygiene, Health Care Assistant, Nursing, Practical Nursing, Social Work, Kinesiology, and a Professional Development and Training department. The mission of the Faculty is to foster student success and develop and maintain relevant, responsive, and stimulating learning opportunities that are community-based, globally and locally, and offered in a visionary, interprofessional environment that is conducive to learning and promotes health and wellness for all. The Dean and the Dean's Office lead, manage, administer and support the instructional, scholarly and outreach activities of the Faculty on four campuses with this mission in mind.Duties:VIU's Faculty of Health Sciences and Human Services' Professional Development and Training Department is seeking instructors to deliver courses within the Animal Care Aide certificate program held both online and at our Nanaimo Campus for the 2026/2027 academic year.Specific Duties:
  • Plan, prepare and instruct program courses;
  • use creative adult learning strategies in the preparation and delivery of online and/or in-person classroom learning;
  • assessment and evaluation of student learning;
  • recording and submitting grades;
  • providing support to students to ensure their success;
  • working collaboratively with colleagues and industry partners.
Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning, and student success. Successful candidates will participate in a variety of direct instructional and non-instructional activities which may include student support, instructor meetings and promotional activities.An overview of the program can be found on the .Please note that start dates may vary depending on the course(s) being taught.Required Qualifications:Veterinary Technician diploma from an appropriately accredited institution and a minimum 5 years of current and relevant experience in the veterinary field.
  • Demonstrated competence for teaching or training adult learners, using a variety of online and in-person teaching strategies to address different learning styles and a diverse student population.
  • A solid understanding of the scope and role of an Animal Care Aide or Veterinary Assistant.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the content covered in the course(s) being taught.
  • Ability to work with a high degree of independence while maintaining effective working relationships with relevant VIU department staff and partners.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of relevant technology and software.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Provincial Instructors Diploma
  • Experience instructing in a post-secondary educational institution
  • Familiarity with online teaching platforms, for example D2L
