We put people above all else, strive to be our best and welcome new ideas to deliver positive outcomes.The Director, Concepts and Advanced Planning is a senior leadership role within the Individual Insurance business, playing a critical role in Equitable’s ability to compete, grow, and manage risk in the high-net-worth, ultra-high-net-worth, corporate, and complex insurance market. Reporting to the VP, Individual Insurance Pricing and Finance, this role provides strategic direction, technical leadership, and governance over Equitable’s advanced insurance planning capabilities, ensuring alignment with product design, pricing intent, profitability, and risk appetite. The Director owns insurance-centric concept development, advanced illustrations, in-force strategies, and advisor enablement, working closely with Distribution partners and tax specialists to ensure technical integrity and disciplined risk management. As a trusted advisor to senior leaders, distributors, and external professional advisors, the Director helps shape Equitable’s advanced planning strategy and market reputation. The role is accountable for establishing and evolving Equitable’s centre of excellence for advanced insurance concepts, including the creation and delivery of enterprise-wide advanced planning education. Operating with significant autonomy, the Director is expected to scale this capability over time by setting standards, building a specialized team, and ensuring Equitable’s most complex and high-value insurance solutions perform as intended over the long term.Join one of the region’s top employers and be part of something that truly makes a difference.Work Arrangements: This is a hybrid role. You will work in our office in Waterloo, ON a minimum of two (2) assigned, consecutive days every other week, plus a fifth (5th) assigned day per month. You are welcome to work from the office more than the minimum requirement and there may be some roles that are required to work in our office more than the minimum requirement.What you’ll do:
  • Lead a multidisciplinary team across Knowledge Management, Quality Assurance, and Controls while championing a culture of continuous improvement, knowledge sharing, and risk-aware decision-making.
  • Own Equitable’s advanced insurance planning framework and proprietary concept portfolio
  • Establish standards, approval processes, and quality controls for all advanced planning educational content to ensure accuracy, consistency, and appropriate use in complex insurance solutions.
  • Provide senior-level complex case consultation to Distribution, National Accounts, and strategic advisors
  • Partner with Tax & Estate Planning to deliver coordinated, risk-appropriate advanced planning support
  • Partner with Pricing & Finance leadership to ensure concepts align with product design, pricing intent, and long-term profitability
  • Represent Equitable’s advanced insurance planning perspective in senior internal forums and selected external advisor or industry engagements, as appropriate, reinforcing Equitable’s technical credibility in complex and advanced markets
  • Design, own, and continuously evolve the advanced insurance planning education curriculum for internal partners, ensuring content is technically sound, aligned with product design and pricing intent, and consistent with Equitable’s risk appetite.
  • Lead the delivery of advanced planning education through scalable forums (formal training, case-based sessions, and technical updates), building deep, consistent capability across Pricing, Distribution, Underwriting, and related functions.
  • Lead competitive intelligence and continuous evolution of advanced planning concepts
  • Build, mentor, and lead a future-state advanced planning team (concept analysts / illustration specialists)
  • Act as a trusted advisor to senior leadership on advanced planning strategy, risk, and financial implications
What you’ll bring:
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in advanced insurance planning, actuarial/pricing, advanced case consulting, or HNW insurance advisory roles
  • Recognized subject matter expertise in permanent insurance, participating whole life, universal life, and corporate insurance structures
  • Strong applied understanding of tax and estate concepts as they relate to insurance, with demonstrated ability to partner with dedicated tax professionals
  • Proven executive-level advisory capability with advisors, accountants, lawyers, and senior internal leadership
  • Professional designation required (CFP, CLU, FSA, FCIA, CPA, LLB/LLM or equivalent); multiple designations strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated comfort and credibility working with HNW and UHNW advisors, including collaboration with accountants, lawyers, and family office professionals on complex insurance strategies
  • Demonstrated leadership capability, including the ability to drive engagement, alignment, and high performance across a complex, cross-functional, and evolving mandate
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, practical guidance for senior leaders, distribution partners, and advisors
  • Broad understanding of the Canadian individual insurance distribution landscape and the role advanced planning plays in supporting large-case and specialty markets
  • Demonstrated experience establishing enterprise capabilities, setting standards, and scaling specialized teams
  • Strong governance, disclosure, and risk mindset appropriate for complex insurance solutions
  • Executive presence with the ability to influence across Distribution, Underwriting, Legal, and Operations
  • Demonstrated public speaking and presentation capability, including comfort presenting advanced insurance concepts to senior internal stakeholders, advisors, and professional audiences in structured training, education, or thought-leadership settings
