Senior Research Assistants are normally graduate students, or University of Winnipeg undergraduate students, employed to assist in the execution and evaluation of research projects in their area of study. The positions may oversee Research Assistants in areas such as the use of proper techniques, analysis, and documentation.Senior Research Assistants work under the general supervision or direction of more senior researchers or faculty members, and are expected to exercise judgment in prioritizing, planning and organizing their own work within defined parameters.Position Overview:The student will assist in the construction of main magnetic field generating coil for the TRIUMF UltraCold Advanced Neutron (TUCAN) electric dipole moment (EDM) experiment. The student will also work with shim coils and spin-flipping coils needed in the experiment. The student will be based at TRIUMF (on the UBC campus in Vancouver) for most of the summer, in order to complete the work.Duties:
  • Prepare equipment and materials for research
  • Student will assist in the construction the main coil for the TUCAN EDM experiment, using precision measurement equipment for alignment.
  • Assist in data collection, data entry, analysis and interpretation.
  • Student will acquire and analyze data on physical dimension measurements of the coil, and will eventually acquire data on magnetic field generated by the coil
  • Assist in preparing article, publications, reports and presentations.
  • Student will prepare weekly progress reports and presentations, and a final report on the work at the end of the summer.
Qualifications:
  • Academic Major: Physics or Honours Physics having completed 2nd-year Physics courses.
  • Overall GPA: minimum 3.5
  • Ability to use precision measurement tools, such as height gauges on a granite table.
  • Ability to analyze data in Python and present results using PowerPoint or equivalent.
  • Requires a lot of standing to perform the measurements and assembly of the coils.
  • Student is expected to relocate to Vancouver, BC to work at TRIUMF, Canada's Particle Accelerator Centre.
