Closing Date: September 18, 2025Position Summary:
The Laboratory Operations Assistant is responsible for assisting with the daily operations and maintenance of the Orsino Cell Processing Laboratory (CPL) in the Blood and Marrow Transplant Program, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. The primary responsibilities include the following duties: Assists with operational projects, product transfer and disposal, operating the controlled rate freezer, monitoring of lab environment and equipment, tanks surveillance, maintaining and cleaning of equipment, data entry and organizing documents, organizing inventory, delivery and pick up of stem cell products and patient samples and documents. Additionally, performing cross-functional and other duties consistent with the job classification, as assigned and/or required.Duties:
  • ​​Assists with operational projects to support effective laboratory maintenance: Works within project teams and supports hands-on execution of project tasks related to inventory management, product disposal, laboratory information systems, new equipment implementation; Provides updates in project team meetings
  • Cell transfer and disposal: Transfers stem cell products from temporary storage to long term storage in liquid nitrogen tanks; Completes and verifies disposal packages according to selected criteria and assists with the disposal of stem cell products and samples no longer needed.
  • Operation and maintenance of Controlled Rate Freezer: Operates and maintains the controlled rate freezer used in cryopreservation of stem cell products.
  • Monitoring of laboratory environment and critical equipment: Reviews periodic monitoring data recorded in the remote monitoring system for critical equipment (e; tanks, fridge, -80 & -20 freezers, etc) to ensure there are no deviations from normal range; Monitors and measures liquid nitrogen levels in stem cell product storage tanks; Assists with updating documentation in the Laboratory Information System (LIS)
  • Maintaining and cleaning facility and laboratory equipment: Assists with equipment cleaning and maintenance scheduling; Ensures all lab equipment maintenance is performed on a routine basis; Helps organizing facility cleanings and environmental testing; Maintains proper documentation in LIS.
  • Data entry and organizing documents: Assists with process for sending charts and documents to third-party storage; Assists with creating patient records in LIS and uploads information as needed; Files paper documentation and/or performs routine documentation uploads into LIS
  • Organizing inventory and preparing supply kits: Assists with materials receipt process in LIS; Replenishes lab supplies/reagents upon receipt for all rooms as required; Assists with documentation updates
  • Delivery and pick of stem cell products, patient samples and documents: Verifies stem cell product pick up forms; Picks up stem cell products and samples from other laboratories/ facilities; Delivers and picks up patient charts and documents
  • Performs cross-functional and/or other duties consistent with the job classification, as assigned or requested
Qualifications
  • Completion of Degree/Diploma in Health Care or Biological Science related program or recognized equivalent required.
  • Minimum 3 years of practical and related experience
  • Ability to perform duties in a professional and courteous manner and produce high quality work while meeting deadlines in accordance to UHN standards.
  • Exercise initiative and good judgement with ability to multi-task.
  • Compliance with confidentiality requirements under UHN Privacy Policy.
  • Effective organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of applicable legislative, UHN and/or departmental policies.
  • Client service oriented, with the ability to effectively work with diversity and appreciate that people with different opinions, backgrounds and characteristics bring richness to the challenge or situation at hand.
