- While maintaining regular job responsibilities (Machinist etc.), Shift Lead Hands will have the following additional job responsibilities:
- Drive the schedule to ensure targets / Tact rates are met per the Master Schedule. When changes are necessary, or issues occur.
- Direct and support department employees on work schedules, prioritizing job tasks, and managing training requirements as necessary. Oversee and schedule workflow through department machines to optimize equipment utilization in full support of Production requirements.
- Provide technical support and advice as related to standards to Inspectors.
- Work closely with the department Supervisors to identify non-conformances and take immediate action to support corrective action and resolution of all issues.
- Review relevant inspection reports when necessary.
- Drives and leads PCR’s and Continuous Improvements.
- Production Specific:
- Host Toolbox Talk at start of your shift. Toolbox talk to include a safety moment, a quality message, pre-job brief of shift tasks and critical aspects of the job that shift. Only if Supervisor is absent.
- Complete the end of shift report and email out to distribution email. Only if Supervisor is absent.
- Ensure that hourly employees have completed timesheets and that any absenteeism was notified to Production Supervisor.
- Complete a shift communication to the production Supervisor for additional information beyond what is noted in the shift report. This should include any machine issues, health and safety concerns, process concerns or resource concerns.
- Follow up with team members to ensure production schedule is being achieved, computer and visual management systems are being updated. (Freedom AI, Supervisor Value Stream Report)
- Reassign machinists to secondary work if machine is down.
- Report any maintenance issues and any machines that are down due to maintenance and or production issues.
- Daily and weekly managing of key priorities, managing changeovers in a timely fashion, ensuring all tooling is clearly defined in the tool setup sheets. Prove-out program with programmer, building setup instructions, enhancing the tooling setup sheets with correct run times, tool length description, offsets to create Job Kits per job.
- Drive continuous improvement in the cell, driving run-time and rework/scrap % reduction, documenting these gaps to management through continuous improvement logs, etc. War on Waste, Engineering Change Request.
- Support Supervisor to ensure all team members are completing the maintenance check list.
- Support the Supervisor in the daily and weekly managing of key priorities through the machinist and QC team to ensure the plan is achieved.
- Problem solves tooling, programing, minor maintenance issues with team members, documenting gaps to management through PCR’s (Production Change Request).
- Assist in necessary corrective actions to prevent scrap and or rework.
- Assist with orientations of new production employees and with others from cross training departments.
- Perform other duties as required.
- Sound understanding of Quality requirements.
- Demonstrated leadership abilities. Previous leadership experience an asset.
- Expertise in reading and interpreting engineering component drawings including a very strong understanding of metrology and GD&T.
- Knowledge of ASME Code, ISO 9001, CSA N285.0 and N299 quality programs is an asset.
- Ability to communicate, motivate and lead teams in the pursuit of optimal resolutions to problems.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills with a focus on continuous improvement.
- Strong communication and problem solving skills to work within a team-based environment.
