Be sure to indicate your faculty and program, your current year, expected graduation date.Hiring Unit: Rare Books and Special CollectionsJob Title: Student Project Assistant – Office Assistant AReports to: Director, Rare Books and Special CollectionsHour of work: 12 hoursHourly Rate: $16.20Classification: AMUSE ADuration: September – December, 2025Job Summary:Project 1Under the supervision of the Director and working closely with Rare Books and Special Collections staff, the Project Assistant will contribute to a collection stabilization project, assist in exhibition preparation, and participate in collection maintenance, instruction, and outreach projects. Task will include but not are not limited to:Stabilization of fragile items through interventions such as wrapping, tying, and boxingCreating or maintaining lists of material not otherwise listed in the library catalogueEnsuring materials are supported and dusted prior to packingParticipating in shifting projects for parts of our collections.Assist with the installation and de-installation of exhibitions.Assist with documentation and collections projects.Support the selection of materials and preparation for classes and events.Other duties as requiredTraining and orientation will be provided. All duties to be completed on-site, in Rare Books and Special Collections, McLennan Library Building.Project 2 :Under the supervision of the Director and working closely with Rare Books and Special Collections curators, the Project Assistant will contribute to the on-going maintenance, processing and basic conservation of targeted collectionsPerform duties related to shelf stabilization of large areas of targeted collections: “Accession- Octavo”; complete LC folio Collection ; parts of the William Colgate History of Printing CollectionWork on special projects in the re-housing and conservation of: Early Printed Books including Incunabula; Historical Documents on parchment; prep Bibles for cataloguingCreate or maintain lists of material not otherwise listed in the library catalogue: Langille Voltaire donation -prep for cataloguing; line-up French cutter books and others for cataloguingParticipate in clean-up and shifting parts of collections for better shelf dispositionOther duties as requiredTraining will be provided using in-house conservation techniques; along with orientation to the collections. All duties to be completed on-site, in Rare Books and Special Collections, 4th floor McLennan Library Building.Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:Attention to detailComfortable lifting boxes onto shelves; working in a sometimes dusty environmentMcGill University is an English-language university where day-to-day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing.
