The PositionUnder the direction of the Program Manager, the Chef will complete all tasks required for the kitchen operations and distribution of the hot meal program to all children attending the center. You will be responsible for menu planning, purchasing groceries and supplies, and preparing nutritious meals and snacks for the children enrolled in the Centre each day. The kitchen is to be managed, and the Chef's work is to be conducted in strict compliance with Food Safe Regulations. The Chef works in consultation with the Manager to ensure the smooth operation of the kitchen and its coordination with the other Centre programs.The Candidate:
  • Planning of lunch menus and snacks per the Canada Food Guide; posting of menus for parents and staff.
  • Conduct housekeeping tasks necessary to maintain the kitchen in an organized, clean, safe and hygienic condition at all times.
  • Complete clean up after each meal (i.e., dishes, countertops, etc.).
  • Meet with the Health Inspector as required to ensure practices comply with the health code.
  • Purchase all groceries to implement the planned menus, in consideration of the Centre's food budget and consultation with the Centre Manager; purchase all household supplies for the Centre.
  • Monitor and use grocery store point cards.
  • Appropriate planning and ordering of the fresh foods and supplies required for the menu while working within the allocated budget.
  • Follow established procedures regarding the forwarding of all receipts related to purchases.
  • Establish open communication with parents regarding children's dietary restrictions, allergies, etc.
  • Perform other tasks within the scope of the position.
Qualifications, Skills and Abilities:
  • High School Diploma.
  • Experience as a cook, preferably in a childcare centre setting.
  • ECE certification would be an asset.
  • Familiarity with planning and implementing menus around the Canada Food Guide.
  • Ability to work in a positive and productive manner within a team.
  • The ability to relate well to children, staff and parents is essential.
  • Food safe certificate; WHIMIS; Valid Standard First Aid and Level 'C' CPR.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft software, including Word, Excel, etc.
  • High energy level with a strong work ethic.
  • Sensitivity and respect for individual and cultural differences.
  • Must be physically able to sit, climb, kneel or crouch and be able to lift/ move at least 25 pounds.
  • A valid Class 5 driver's license is required.
  • Must be willing and able to pass a criminal record check with vulnerable sectors.
