- Serve as a cultural guide and advisor, ensuring that organizational initiatives and decisions align with and respect indigenous values and traditions.
- Establish and maintain strong connections with indigenous communities, acting as a bridge between the organization and the community to foster collaboration and understanding.
- Develop and deliver cultural competency training for staff, promoting a deeper understanding of indigenous perspectives, history and contemporary issues.
- Advocate for the inclusion and recognition of indigenous perspectives in policies, programs, and practices, promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Provide support and resources to indigenous elders within the organization, ensuring their wellbeing and involvement in decision-making processes.
- Facilitate and oversee cultural ceremonies and events, promoting a respectful and inclusive environment for all participants.
- Collaborate with internal teams to integrate indigenous perspectives into projects, events, and initiatives, fostering a culturally rich and diverse workplace.
- Connect daily with those identified within the Community Member Services (CMS).
- Assist in implementing referrals to appropriate community services, such as VCH programs, local physicians, and Sechelt Hospital.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other program staff, as well as contact agencies and outside organizations.
- Participate in internal or external committees as required or assigned.
- Other duties as required and assigned within the scope of the position.
- A secondary school diploma or employer-approved alternatives or an acceptable combination of education, training, and/ or experience.
- Two years of experience working, preferably in First Nations communities.
- Knowledge of shíshálh Nation programs and services or willing to learn.
- Respect for, sensitivity towards, as well as knowledge and understanding of shíshálh culture and traditions.
- Understanding of and ability to translate relevant legislation into the Nation language, policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of First Nation service delivery, customs and traditions in responding to Elders.
- Knowledge of external services and service agencies.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a clear Criminal Records Check.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid BC Driver’s License and have access to a reliable vehicle.
- The hours of work, including days off and work area, may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements.
