- Minimum of grade 12 education required.
- Has obtained a recognized nursing license (LPN licensing) and in good standing with BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCN&M).
- Certified in Emergency First Aid, CPR and AED certifications, required.
- Previous experience working as an LPN in a health care setting is considered an asset.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbally, in the English language, nurturing excellent human relations with residents, families and other team members.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and to evaluate and meet resident care needs, demonstrating initiative and problem-solving skills.
- Dependable, responsible and an ability to work well with others in a team environment and independently. Demonstrates a positive attitude necessary to meet the goals and standards of the residence.
- A resident-oriented individual, whose visions and values align with those of the residence.
- Has demonstrated excellent leadership skills.
- Must have proficient computer skills (i.e. Word and Excel).
- Participates in and adheres to continuous quality improvement standards.
- Participates in assessing the needs of individual residents and organizes care plan to promote maximum resident independence.
- Participates in the pre-move-in and ongoing assessments on the health and wellness needs of individual residents and makes recommendations, as necessary, regarding an individual’s suitability for residence and their needs. Stays up-to-date on services provided and works with residents and their families to meet the residents’ needs.
- Ensures the resident’s file is established, with proper documentation and safe practices related to medication administration processes.
- Updates residents’ care plan every 6 months, or as required.
- Carries out planned assignments as designated by the Health and Wellness Manager/Director of Care/ Health and Wellness Supervisor, or designate, for effective resident care, taking into account the physical, spiritual, social and emotional needs of the individual.
- Supervises the care given by attendants or designated staff, in accordance with the resident care plans and provides job guidance to general duty attendants.
- Distributes medications and provides treatments to residents in accordance with current and approved standards of care, policies and procedures.
- Answers emergency calls from residents, giving assistance where possible, and contacting professional help and/or family when necessary.
- Provides direct resident care, in accordance with current and approved standards of care, policies and procedures.
- Complies with infection control protocols as directed, e.g. outbreak management.
- Acts as a leader and helps develop employees to ensure an adequate level of service and job standard are achieved.
- In the absence of a manager, responsible for actioning on any emergency situations requiring immediate attention, should they arise.
- Maintains accurate records of nursing observations and procedures performed. Completes all required reports.
- Assists in maintaining a neat, clean and safe environment for residents and personnel. Recognizes safety hazards and takes appropriate action.
- Assists with safekeeping of all medication and nursing solutions in the residence.
- Reports all incidents and changes in resident status to Health & Wellness Manager/ Director of Care/ Health and Wellness Supervisor, and subsequent shift as well as completes shift report.
- Participates as a member of the multi-disciplinary team in the development of, and implementation of, a care plan for residents that supports independence.
- Keeps the Health & Wellness Manager informed of staff member performance.
- Assists in monitoring and evaluating outcome of specific interventions regularly and offers information or suggestions for improvement.
- Provides ongoing support to co-workers and acts as advocate for residents and families to ensure residents’ rights are protected.
- Utilizes equipment and supplies effectively and in accordance with policies and procedures, manufacturer’s instructions, and health and safety regulations.
- Serves beverages and resident meals in dining room, as requested.
- Assists with other duties to ensure the smooth functioning of the residence, including housekeeping and laundry duties, maintains adequate stock of supplies, as required.
- Maintains effective communication, both written and verbal with co-workers. Uses the appropriate lines of communication with supervisory staff, and good interpersonal relations with residents, families, physicians and other departments.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Health and Wellness Manager/Director of Care/ Health and Wellness Supervisor or delegate.
- Complies with all corporate policies and procedures.
- Completes all required mandatory training/education.
- Complies with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, and Workplace Hazardous Material Information System/Globally Harmonized System. This includes recognizing health and safety hazards, reporting incidents, fulfilling responsibilities under the applicable legislation, as well as participating in in-services and fire drills. Participates in the ongoing Fire Prevention, and Pest Control programs and any other programs as required.
