- Performs laboratory procedures and functions and ensures the completion of assigned workload
- Operates, troubleshoots and maintains laboratory equipment and cleanliness of work area
- Prepares written and electronic reports required to document procedures and test results
- Performs inventory management of blood and blood products
- Serves as a technical resource
- Helps investigate and troubleshoot issues as required
- Reviews and signs quality control documentation; follows up on discrepancies in quality control testing
- Utilizes practical and theoretical knowledge to guide, organize and distribute workload in the lab
- Updates and maintains Transfusion Medicine operating procedures
- Trains new staff, assesses technical performance and maintains training records as required
- Oversees equipment maintenance, validation, and adherence of equipment related policies as required
- Ensures adequate staff coverage during breaks; performs bench schedule adjustments for the lab, within scope of authority.
- Collaborates and liaises with internal and external stakeholders to provide safe and timely transfusion care
- Attends, participates and facilitates discussions at appropriate departmental meetings, as required.
- Participates in professional development, teaching/education activities, safety and quality improvement programs to ensure excellence in the provision of services
- Completion of a recognized Medical Laboratory Technologist program
- Current registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO)
- Five (5) years recent Transfusion Medicine laboratory experience in a large hospital, preferred
- Demonstrates ability to develop skills and knowledge in all areas of the laboratory (on-the-job experience)
- Demonstrates thorough knowledge of theory, lab procedures, instruments, equipment, special techniques and quality assurance in Transfusion Medicine
- Excellent problem recognition and problem solving-skills
- Effective time management skills; ability to organize work and set priorities

- Computer literacy
