The CLSA has recruited 51,000 individuals across Canada to participate over 20 years, approximately 1500 of whom are interviewed and assessed through a data collection site (DCS) at UBC in Vancouver. Information is collected from participants once every 3 years through in-person interviews, as well as physical assessments and biological sample collections at the UBC DCS.Job SummaryThe senior CLSA Phlebotomist-Medical Laboratory Technologist (CLSA PhMLT) will contribute to overall project goals through the effective execution of assigned responsibilities, while also providing leadership in the design, coordination, and oversight of laboratory operations. This includes supporting the CLSA DCS Manager (the Manager) with laboratory‑specific administrative and operational functions related to quality assurance for biological sample collection, accreditation of laboratory management systems, and ongoing laboratory equipment maintenance and calibration. Under the guidance of the Manager and Principal Investigator, the CLSA PhMLT is responsible for training, mentoring, and directly supervising new CLSA laboratory personnel, contributing to the development and implementation of standardized laboratory procedures and best practices.Organizational StatusThe CLSA PhMLT reports directly to the CLSA Data Collection Site Manager (the Manager) and works collaboratively with other study personnel on data collection. The Manager reports directly to the UBC CLSA Site Principal Investigator, Dr. Teresa Liu-Ambrose, and the CLSA National Coordinating Centre at McMaster University.Work PerformedProvide leadership in the design, coordination, and oversight of laboratory operations.Collect urine and blood samples from study participants at the DCS.Prepares the arm for venipuncture, initiates and completes the blood collection process, and obtains specimens in accordance with regulatory requirements and CLSA standard operating procedures (SOPs), including monitoring for and reporting adverse reactions to phlebotomy, and summons assistance from the CLSA Manager, staff and institutional support teams as required and according to regulatory guidelines, institutional and study (CLSA) specific SOPs.Receive stool samples from a subset of study participants who were given stool sample collection kits for home sample collection to bring to the DCS.In relation to the above tests/data collection, when required, will modify procedures to suit the needs of an individual and/or conduct complex analysis and interpretation.Manage and track sample collection and processing, including sample labelling, pre-analytical processing and preparation of samples for frozen storage onsite, and weekly shipping of frozen samples to the CLSA’s central biorepository at McMaster University.Conduct laboratory tests and sample analyses at the DCS, that require specialized training and expertise.Set up, test, operate, and maintain of DCS medical laboratory equipment, including daily, weekly, monthly, and annual calibrations and other quality control procedures that require extensive training.Clean and maintain DCS medical laboratory space and equipment.Record inventories of consumable supplies once per month.Monitor and be responsible for the implementation of unit safety rules and procedures.Lead efficacy evaluation of the processes listed aboveInstruct, train, and supervise others in the use of specialized techniques and equipment.May assist with development and revision of CLSA data collection and assessment methodology, and revision of existing or creation of new technical and methodological documentation.Will facilitate technical consultation, advice, and instruction to faculty members, researchers, and graduate and post-doctoral students in the appropriate use, selection and modification of specialized techniques used by the CLSA.May attend scientific meetings, present posters or papers, and may attend meetings of CLSA senior research staff as required and related to study operations and quality management.Carry out any other duties as required in keeping with qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification, including refreshment of training as required to maintain performance standards, and as study protocols or technologies change.Decision Making/AccountabilityWorks within clearly defined guidelines and procedures, but exercises judgment in establishing priorities, trouble-shooting problems, and carrying tasks through to completion; new or unusual problems are referred to the Manager, a more senior CLSA PhMLT on the local team if available, or the CLSA National Biorepository Coordinator at McMaster University.Consequence of Error/JudgementInappropriate judgement would compromise the quality of research studies and related data acquisition and the reporting of research outcomes.Inappropriate judgement also could compromise the safety and wellbeing of the participants.Inappropriate judgement would compromise research success and affect the credibility of the Principal Investigator.Supervision ReceivedWorks under the direction of the Manager in carrying out all phases of duties and responsibilities; receives instructions from the Manager but works independently and will supervise more junior-level staff.Supervision GivenThe CLSA PhMLT trains and supervises newly hired and lower-level laboratory staff on the use of equipment, on study methods and lab procedures, including lab safety. They oversee the work of incumbents in lower-level positions within CLSA laboratory operations.Minimum Qualifications Completion of a university degree in a relevant discipline or technical program and a minimum four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Some positions may require a graduate degree.- Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own- Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusionPreferred QualificationsEnglish fluency.Minimum 5 years’ experience as a phlebotomist in a clinical or research laboratory with broad knowledge of laboratory systems, equipment and methods.Superior phlebotomy proficiency and experience.Must demonstrate phlebotomy and sample handling proficiency, including technical and soft skills required for efficient and safe sample collection, accurate sample processing, and while maintaining a respectful, calm and reassuring relationship with study participantsGraduate of BC or Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Sciences approved program.WHMIS, TDG (air and ground), laboratory and biosafety training required (will be upgraded through UBC if necessary).Proficiency working with computers running Microsoft operating systems and laboratory information management systems (LIMS) software applications.Must be well organized, detail-oriented and able to adhere to detailed SOPs and keep concise records of all laboratory reagents, maintenance and calibration tasks, equipment failures, service and repairs.Must be reliable, independent and professional.Must be willing to work evenings and weekends.Other RequirementsMust be willing to work evenings and weekends.
