Maximum 45 bi-weekly hoursShifts:
Days/evenings and weekends (7.5 and 11.25 hours shifts)Responsibilities:
- The clinical extern will be working in the capacity of an unregulated health care provider (UCP). Clinical externs work in collaboration with a unit clinical team under direct and/or indirect supervision of an appointed registered health professional
- Assists the unit clinical team in a team-based model of care to provide support to the patient care teams by assisting patients with:
- Mobility assistance (i.e., lifting, turning, positioning, ambulating, etc.)
- Assistance with Activities of Daily Living (i.e., feeding, dressing, etc.)
- Provision of measures to ensure skin integrity
- Assistance with comfort measures
- Activation, companionship, and social engagement
- Other care activities as needed and appropriate for clinical area and population servedRequirements of the job- Currently enrolled in and/or completed one of the following:
- Nursing students in any year of study of an approved baccalaureate nursing program
- Nursing students in any year of an approved practical nursing program
- Occupational therapy students in any year of study in a training program accredited by the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT)
- Paramedic students in second year of study in a training program approved Paramedic Program
- Physiotherapy students in any year of study in a training program accredited by Physiotherapy Education Accreditation Canada (PEAC)
- Respiratory Therapy students in their second and third year of a training program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Respiratory Therapy Education
- Internationally Trained Nurse (without CNO licensure)
- Current BCLS
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment
- Demonstrated responsibility and skills to work independently
- Knowledge of body mechanics, and safe patient lift and transfer practices - Effective communication skills to provide ongoing support and care for diverse patients and communication any concerns or changes in the patient's condition
- Demonstrated organizational and time management skills
- Commitment to maintain dignity and self-esteem of patients and families in delivery of care
- Proficient computer/technological skills
- Ability to work under pressure, request assistance when required, and adapt to change rapidly
