Description :SMS Equipment is seeking a Technical Specialist, Trucks. This role provides technical expertise to support safe, efficient, and timely equipment repairs at SMS’ Remote Mining locations. The Technical Support Specialist assists tradespeople with complex maintenance issues and collaborates with centralized teams to improve planning, reliability, and continuous improvement.Work Location: Fort Hills, AB
Salary: $118,000 - $125,000 Annually
Work Arrangement: Fixed on site.
Schedule: This is a 7 days on / 7 days off fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) camp-based position. Candidates must be able to travel to and from one of the designated flight hubs in Calgary or Edmonton.What You’ll DoProject Support
  • Provide rapid response and advanced troubleshooting for equipment-down situations, including after-hours support
  • Track and monitor field test programs and product issues; communicate with Reliability, Corporate Technical Support, OEMs, and customers
  • Identify technical issues impacting equipment availability and recommend continuous improvement opportunities
Customer Service
  • Provide technical support to customers and resolve equipment-related concerns
  • Act as the primary liaison between SMS Equipment, Komatsu, and customers
  • Diagnose issues, recommend solutions, implement corrective actions, and follow up to ensure resolution
  • Attend product meetings and lead task force committees related to product issues
Reporting
  • Prepare and maintain required customer and technical reports
  • Document equipment observations and communicate findings to stakeholders
  • Complete Field Service Reports, TSIs, and equipment downtime or status updates
Training
  • Stay current with technical information, product updates, and industry best practices
  • Provide technical training and support preventative and predictive maintenance programs
  • Review maintenance, vibration, and oil analysis programs to maximize equipment performance
Other Duties
  • Support special projects, major equipment outages, and overhauls as required
  • Attend weekly branch meetings and assist with warranty processes
What You BringThe successful candidate will have a Journeyperson-level trades certification with a minimum of 3–5 years of Komatsu equipment-specific and/or heavy equipment experience, along with strong knowledge of equipment and parts maintenance and repair. An engineering degree (mechanical, electrical, or related discipline) is considered an asset. Other requirements include:
  • Strong communication, organizational, and multi-tasking skills, with the ability to maintain accurate and detailed documentation
  • Excellent computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel, General Electric software, Cummins engine software, Payload, Komtrax, and similar systems, with the ability to learn new technologies
  • Working knowledge of applicable acts, regulations, and equipment inspection requirements, and the ability to work with local and regulatory authorities
  • Valid driver’s license
