Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM and during winter operations there is a rotation of nights 10:30 PM – 7:00 AM

Salary: $39.23 per hour (under review) plus a $1.85 shift premium as applicable.

Reporting to the Supervisor, Fleet and Maintenance Contracts, the Licensed Mechanic is responsible for diagnostic, troubleshooting, repair, maintenance, inspection, overhauls, and services of transit buses, trucks, and various other equipment that supports the City’s operations. The licensed mechanic is responsible for ensuring the fleet inventory is maintained to the highest standard while being safety conscious.KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide timely, accurate information to the Supervisor(s), and respond appropriately to their decisions and directions.
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, maintain, overhaul and service various types of municipal equipment such as transit buses, trucks, graders, and mowers
- Test and adjust repaired equipment for proper performance.
- Clean, lubricate, and perform other maintenance requirements.
- Complete various administrative tasks pertaining to maintenance such as work orders and MTO Safety Inspections.
- Inspect and test vehicles, determining the causes of improper, inoperative, or mechanical failure of engines, transmissions, differentials, and other drive unit parts.
- Disassemble engine transmissions, differentials, and other drive parts, inspecting visually by gauges and calibers, and other testing equipment, engine parts, etc., for wear.
- Determine by way of preventative maintenance and routine inspections, repairs that should be carried out, parts necessary, and/or parts that should be replaced.
- Replace or repair worn parts, check for correct clearance, reassemble engines and unit parts, replace in chassis.
- Diagnose and repair engine accessories (e.g. gasoline starting motors, alternators, etc.), using specialized testing equipment; identify causes of malfunction, replace or repair worn parts, and reassemble components to ensure proper operation. Repair electrical accessories such as windshield wipers, headlights, clearance lights, taillights and brake lights; determine the cause of breakdown, install or repair new wiring, bulbs, horn, relays or replace electrically operated wiper motors.
- Populate and complete work orders.
- Communicate professionally, and effectively with all staff, vendors, and members of the general public, promoting a high standard of customer service.

- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Valid G Driver’s Licence and a clean driver’s abstract to be held and maintained.
- Valid Class 310T Truck and Coach Technician licence.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Highway Traffic Act Ontario Regulation 419/15, 575, 601, Passenger/Light Duty Vehicle Inspection Standard Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- Demonstrated proficiency with computers and automated work order systems, and the MTO DriveON program.
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check (“CRC”) prior to commencing work at the City of Belleville.
- Valid Class 310S Automotive Service Technician license.
- Valid Class CZ or DZ driver’s license and a clean driver’s abstract to be held and maintained.
- Ability and willingness to stay current with new technologies and equipment to perform inspections, diagnostics, and repairs.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Four (4) years’ relevant experience.
- Experience with fire apparatus and heavy truck repair and maintenance.
- Possession of valid EVT F1, F2, F3, F4 and F5 certifications would be an asset or must be willing to receive such certifications.
- Experienced with hydraulic and/or electrical work.
- Welding and fabrication experience.
- Interpretation of blueprints and technical manuals.
- Working in a Unionized environment.
