- Ensure sample identification is correct and specimen requirements are met according to established procedures
- Ensure tests are performed in a timely manner
- Responsible for the follow-up on missing samples, documentation and results in their department
- Perform patient's sample testing and measurement using a variety of manual and automated procedures
- Record, interpret and/or approve test results according to established procedures in a timely manner
- Ensure that abnormal Stat and critical results are handled as outlined in the department guidelines
- Responsible to sign-off on reports as required
- Consult with department supervisor to assist with non-routine problems or concerns
- Ensure all inquiries and problems are handled in a courteous and professional manner
- Maintain confidentiality of appropriate documentation
- If applicable ensure adequate amount of supplies are on hand and that validated in date reagents and testing kits are used
- Ensure maintenance of inventory records
- Ensure that Quality Control (QC)/Quality Assurance (QA) is performed according to department policies and procedures
- Participate in external proficiency testing programs and/or other quality activities
- Follow guidelines as required by external regulatory bodies
- Responsible to follow all relevant pre and/or post analytical QA processes as described in the company quality manual
- Contribute towards Dynacare's learning and knowledge based culture by sharing in the responsibility of training of staff and skill development of new team members as requested
- Observe and report all malfunctions with equipment and record all corrective action(s) taken
- Follow manufacturer's guidelines for the operation, maintenance, and minor troubleshooting
- Maintain all logbooks for routine equipment maintenance
- Act as a resource person for the medical laboratory staff with the handling of questions and concerns, regarding technical inquiries
- Assist with proper scheduling, staffing and coordinating weekend shifts as required
- Assist in the implementation and creation of new policies, procedures and programs
- Report or follow-up on test results from referral labs as required
- Interact with Department Head or designate to assist in non-routine problems or concerns
- Assist with the writing and updates of departmental manuals where appropriate, bring problems (technical/personal) to the attention of Department Head or designate
- Accumulate, summarize, review and problem solve quality control data as required
- Successful completion of an accredited MLT program
- CMLTO Registered Medical Laboratory Technologist in good standing
- 6 years of related experience required
- Frequently required to work unsupervised with extensive independent judgement
- Provide consultation and technical support on non-routine issues as required
- Ability to perform in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to make independent decisions that directly impact the client, patient and the department
- Ability to lift 30 lbs. (pounds)
- High visual requirements
- Repetitive fine motor movements of hands
- Perform duties in stationary standing/sitting positions
- Exposure to noise, chemicals, solvents and bio-hazardous and radioactive materials
