Are you passionate about inspiring children and adults with incredible facts about the world’s amazing animals? As an Interpreter at the Edmonton Valley Zoo, you apply your public speaking, engagement, and problem solving skills to inspire and connect a diverse population of children and adults to animal conservation and help them ‘Get Closer’ to the natural world.What will you do?
  • Create and lead a variety of educational programs including school and group programs, day camps, birthday parties
  • Deliver drop-in programs for the general public which consist of roving, point interpretation, large group presentations and theatrical presentations
  • Discuss program requirements with parents, teachers and group leaders prior to programs
  • Implement overnight programs, virtual outreach programs to schools and festivals
  • Supervise and direct the work of volunteers during programming
  • Assist in the maintenance of artifacts, exhibits and program supplies as well as the care and handling of small animals involved with the programs
  • Support a safe experience for all participants
  • Set up and take down of program activities
  • Independently complete administrative tasks
  • Conduct other related duties as required
Qualifications
  • Completion of Grade 12 or high school equivalency
  • Experience working with children and youth such as: volunteer work, reading buddies, green shack programs, summer camps, refereeing, coaching (such as hockey or soccer, etc), dance instruction
  • Experience delivering educational content such as leading activities or games with the general public, tour groups, or children
  • Previous customer service experience
  • Relevant experience working with the general public, tour groups, children and other program users
Assets:
  • Current registration in or completed post-secondary diploma or degree in Education, Biological or Environmental Sciences, Drama, Recreation and Leisure Studies or a related field
  • Experience working in another zoo or interpretive facility
  • Experience/knowledge of safe animal handling procedures
  • Ability to converse in a second language
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s licence or provincial equivalent and ability to obtain a City Driver’s Permit
Skills required for success:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of local and exotic wildlife
  • Highly developed verbal communication customer service skills
  • Highly developed problem solving skills and ability to work as part of a team

  • Valid Intermediate First Aid & CPR Level C certification are required prior to employment
  • Hire is dependent on Police Information Check, including Vulnerable Sector satisfactory to the City of Edmonton

Work Environment:
  • Ability to work holidays, evenings and overnights, as required
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance
