- The Electrician handles a variety of electrical components varying from small wires to large industrial cables and may be provided with assistance when handling materials or objects over 50 lbs.
- The Electrician uses some power tools and manual tools during the installation or repair of any electrical object in the facility.
- Tools are placed into a tool caddie and transported to the location.
- The Electrician may be required to work on a ladder, scissor lift, or high-lift to access high areas, or may be perched or balanced on top of a piece of equipment.
- The Electrician may be required to access low levels and reach into semi-confined area,s assuming a variety of low-level postures or lying supine or prone.
- The Electrician may statically control a load or apply rotational or torquing forces to components using manual hand forces.
- Ontario College of Skilled Trades certified electrician required (442A or 309A) required
- G.E.D. or high school diploma
- Minimum 2 years of industrial electrical experience
- 2 years of mining electrical experience, preferred
- Must be familiar with the Lock Out/Tag Out Policy and Procedures
- Requires thorough knowledge of heavy industrial/ mining electrical maintenance practices
- Proficient in troubleshooting 3-phase 4160V motor control centers, maintenance, and repair
- Proficient in 480V 3-phase and 4160V 3-phase mine power feeder circuits with ground monitors
- Proficiency in reading schematics and calculating wire size and motor horsepower requirements for new installations
- Able to use schematics and ladder logic to troubleshoot PLCs, soft starts, and other types of motor control circuits; must be familiar with the safe operation of required equipment.
- Is required to operate and be alert to any conditions which could pose a safety hazard or result in injury or equipment breakdown or damage, and to report or correct such conditions immediately
- Must be able to read and understand verbal and written instructions
- Some computer skills needed (CAT ET, Windows, SMAG, etc.)
- Works in an underground mine where temperatures in the work areas range from 78° – 100°F. The relative humidity is high in summer and low in winter.
- Works on the surface of the mine where conditions are related to weather outdoors, with varying ranges in temperature and humidity. The environment has a fair amount of noise and dust.
- Work areas are generally dry.
- Lighting is provided in key areas; however, most areas are illuminated only by a miner’s cap lamp and/or by equipment lighting.
- Floor heave is prevalent and may result in uneven floor conditions. Floors may also be polished by mobile equipment traffic resulting in slippery footing.
- Some work must be done around machinery and equipment that is in motion, as well as around energized power cables.
- As with all work underground, this position requires attention to be paid to roof and rib conditions.
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time while operating machinery.
- Must be able to walk for long distances over terrain varying from soft to hard, as well as slick and uneven.
- Must be able to sit in operator’s seat for long periods of time while operating the machine and being subject to whole-body vibrations.
- Must be able to work from heights and wear/utilize a full-body harness to perform work as necessary
- Must be able to use a shovel to clean up spillage and lift 5 feet
- Must be able to operate various machinery by manipulating multiple hand and foot control levers, sometimes simultaneously.
- Must be capable of lifting 50 lbs.
- Must be able to ascend and descend a ladder of at least thirty (30) feet in length.
